REQUEST FOR COMMENTS RIPLEY PROJECT LIBBY RANGER DISTRICT KOOTENAI NATIONAL FOREST The Libby Ranger District of the Kootenai National Forest has developed a proposed action for the Ripley project. The project area, in general, is located east of Libby, Montana and Highway 2 and south of the Kootenai River to the McMillan drainage. The proposal includes vegetation management treatments, some treatment within dry site old growth, permanent and temporary road construction, system road reconstruction, road storage and decommissioning, non-motorized and motorized trail development, firewood gathering opportunities, and connected activities such as reforestation and spraying for noxious weeds. The proposed action includes regeneration harvest which would create openings that exceed 40 acres in size. County, CPMC cooperate on mental health
After Western Montana Mental Health closed down their Libby operations, the Lincoln County Health Department stepped up to fill the gaps left, creating a network of healthcare providers that could be called in to do mental health evaluations. Now, Cabinet Peaks Medical Center will be taking over the duties of providing the mental health evaluations for people in crisis at the emergency room, according to the Lincoln County Health Department.

Following an attempt in May to smuggle drugs into the Lincoln County Detention Center, a local man was sentenced to 13 months with the Montana Department of corrections with 10 years suspended and credit for time served in Montana 19th Judicial District Court on June 24.
Libby Chainsaw Event is roaring success
In the first year it has been held in July — and one of the first where event-founder Ron Adamson had a group of volunteers to help him plan — organizers of the Ron Adamson Libby Chainsaw Event are considering it a success.

The Libby Loggers American Legion baseball team went 1-1 in a doubleheader against the Mission Valley Mariners July 3 at Lee Gehring Memorial Field, winning the first game 5-1, and falling 19-8 in the second.

Melvin Price
Melvin (Shorty) G. Price, 74, died on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at his home in Troy, Montana, of natural causes. He was born March 8, 1945, in Jordan, Montana, to Gordon and Dora Price. He spent his younger years on the family ranch prior the family moving to Troy in January 1956. He attended Troy schools until he began working with his father harvesting short logs. Later he worked for the lumber mill in Libby in the plywood department. He was contacted by a drilling company in the 1960s and traveled the intermountain west as a core driller. Shorty began working for the City of Troy in 1978 and became a certified water operator in 1981. He worked as city maintenance foreman until he retired in 1996.

Kendall “Ken” C. Onstott, 78, of Troy, Montana, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at his home in Troy. He was born November 9, 1940 in Newport, Oregan, to Sterling and Lola (Bernard) Onstott.

Wildfire smoke from poor management, not climate change

In reality, the cause is the poor management practices of the Forest Service relative to our forests who fail to realize that first and foremost, there must be a commitment to put the fires out immediately. There is no such thing as “managing” a forest fire.
