Thank you, Flathead Electric

On behalf of the Heritage Museum in Libby, I would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who have contributed to Flathead Electric’s “Roundup for Safety” program. This program fosters a safe environment for our communities. The Heritage Museum’s fire alarm system was inspected this year and found to be not in compliance with the 2012 International fire Code approved fire protection plan. The Museum needed $3,877 to complete the work to make the building compliant. Upon application to the Roundup for Safety Program, Flathead Electric awarded $2,000 toward the Museum’s total bill. The work on the alarm system has now been completed and the Museum building is again in compliance with code. Visitors to the Museum, during the recent Holiday Bazaar and Open Houses, were in a safer environment. In addition, the artifacts that are preserved in the Museum, for the historical education of future generations, are adequately protected.

What I am thankful for

The 2016 Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner was such a wonderful dinner that we wanted to make sure to thank each and every one who took part. An undertaking like this would be impossible were it not for all the many people who contributed their time, food, and money to make the event such a success. Our thanks and appreciation also goes to the VFW for the use of their facility, Libby Senior Center for the use of their tables, the Libby Ministerial Association and area churches whose members provided much of the food and volunteer effort, Thrivent Financial for an action team grant, local merchants, and all who helped in any way to make this year’s dinner possible. We both consider it a privilege to be part of such a caring and generous community.

D*** Confused

While I am d*** mad, why don’t we reexamine our failed effort to create federally funded native nations within our own United States borders. We, tax payers, have supported the native population in a practically perpetual welfare state since the late 1800s. How about just dissolving reservations and assimilating the sovereign native into the rest of America, with all the same rights and privileges as the rest of us Americans. Of course, this would require the removal of special privileges for people whose ancestors were here prior to civilization coming to America. I have English, French and Choctaw native blood, but that gives me no special rights that any other American is not entitled to. Think about it, how long can we continue to be divided by arguments over water, fishing, hunting and land control rights between so called sovereign nations within our nation and the rest of our nation? Are we all Americans or should I use my passport whenever I enter or leave the sovereign reservations? If so, they should have to have a passport to leave their sovereign (countries) reservations!

When free speech skips school

In 2006, I clipped a “Non Sequitur” cartoon that captured perfectly the mystique that surrounds our nation’s universities. The cartoon pictured a professor ensconced in a cubicle surrounded by an alligator-infested moat — drawbridge up — while one outsider, gazing across the moat, says to another: “We have no idea what he does, which, of course, is one of the great perks of tenure.”

Winning based on the popular vote: a new system

The debate has started again as to whether the U.S. Constitution should be amended in order to change the presidential election process. Some promote eliminating the Electoral College in favor of a direct popular vote for president while others believe the Electoral College should remain unchanged. Just as compromise solved the initial problems of the framers so it is that compromise can solve this problem. The solution is to change the electoral votes to electoral points and reward each candidate a percentage of points based on the percentage of popular votes received in each state. This would eliminate the “winner take all” system thus allowing for all the votes to count. A voter is more apt to believe their vote counted when a percentage of popular votes are taken into account rather than the “all or nothing” system currently in existence. Further, this new system would integrate the desire for a popular vote for president with the need for the individual states to determine who actually gets elected.
