Libby man accused of writing bad checks

A Libby man arrested last month is accused of writing fraudulent checks worth more than $1,000 to businesses in the area.

Daniel Z. Erickson, 31, of Libby, was arrested on Nov. 30 for issuing bad checks in a common scheme, a felony. If convicted, he faces up to $50,000 in fines and a maximum 10-year prison sentence. His preliminary hearing has been set for 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 14.

Lincoln County Detective Dave Hall in late September received copies of several checks written from a closed bank account that allegedly belonged to Erickson. Between Aug. 12 and Sept. 12, Erickson allegedly wrote four checks totaling $1,145.44 to local businesses.

Hall reached out to each business and reported that an employee from each store identified Erickson by a photograph. According to court documents, one employee told Hall that she had found where Erickson lived and confronted him about the bad check. She said Erickson had told her that he would take care of the matter by the next day, but never contacted the woman again.

Lincoln County Justice of the Peace Jay Sheffield set Erickson’s bond at $10,000.
