Equality for women is still a goal not achieved

On Aug. 26, 1920, the amendment guaranteeing the right to vote for women officially became part of the United States Constitution. The anniversary of this historic achievement deserves recognition, celebration, and a huge thank you to those brave women who faced beatings, starvation, torture and false imprisonment so that women today might have the privilege of casting a ballot.  It is 95 years later and unfortunately, equality continues to elude many women.

Movers & Shakers

Movers & Shakers

My husband and I moved to Libby this summer and we have really enjoyed meeting people in the community.  We both grew up in a small town in southwestern Wisconsin but were living in Saint Louis, Mo. After living there for a few years, we decided that we wanted to move to a smaller community with more opportunity for outdoor recreation.  We have definitely found that here and have had a great summer exploring the Cabinets and paddle boarding.  I have been in the health fitness industry for the past 8 plus years.  During this time, I have worked in different gyms and health clubs, small to large, provided private and small group personal training services, instructed group fitness classes, and co-managed a personal training department, however I have always wanted to start my own health fitness training studio.  I am offering personal training services in clients’ homes and in a private studio space located inside Orthopedic Rehab.  I look forward to interacting with existing health wellness businesses, organizations and professionals in the area to continue to promote active, healthful lifestyles within Lincoln County

Trump's immigration paradox

I wonder if Donald Trump’s family has a coat of arms. If not, I suggest that the most fitting heraldic symbol for the Republican presidential front-runner is an open can, labeled worms. The Donald has certainly demonstrated a flair for bringing controversial issues to the table. Following several amuse bouchees and appetizers, it looks like the soup course is birthright citizenship.

Crossover sabotage requires effort and coordination

Election  results looked very suspicious in the Montana primary election of 1964.  Even though Democratic challenger Mike Kuchera, also known as Polka Mike, lost the primary election to Roland Renne, he actually got more votes (56,710) than the incumbent Governor Tim Babcock (56,425). Reporters asked Governor Babcock for an explanation and the headline read: “Babcock Says There Was GOP Crossover.”

Extra resources help minimize fire damage

July has been an active month for fire-fighting activity in Lincoln County. In addition to unseasonably high temperatures and low stream-flows, the area has been plagued with several arson fires in recent months. At a meeting with county commissioners last week, Kootenai National Forest Supervisor Chris Savage credited the presence and availability of above-normal levels of firefighting resources to the area for the lack of any devastating fires, such as those that have occurred in other parts of the region.

For nearly three years, individuals and organizations across Montana have been working hard to expand Medicaid and increase access to affordable health care for the lowest-income Montanans. Even though we lost a legislative battle in 2013, we kept fighting because we knew we could not give up. There are too many people in our state who need help. In Montana, we find solutions to problems. And for a problem of this size, doing nothing was not an option.
