Goat Rock Complex fires returning to local authority
Warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity caused visible plumes of smoke to rise from fires in the Kootenai National Forest during the past weekend, but officials are confident the worst is over as autumn weather dominates the coming forecast. The Type-II Rocky Mountain incident management team responsible for the Goat Rock Complex of fires in the forest is officially turning over management of the fires to the United States Forest Service as of Monday afternoon.
Libby man arrested for partner assault
A Libby man was arrested on two misdemeanor charges early Monday morning and ordered held on $100,000 bond.
County payments raise questions
Lincoln County’s financial controls are being reevaluated in the wake of the discovery of payments made to an outside law firm for work that was improperly billed, yet paid, by the Lincoln County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. The two questionable payments amounted to $2,307.16 of a total $11,265.96 billed during a span of 14 months.

Beth V. Schweitzer, 73, of Troy, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at the Libby Care Center. She was born Jan. 31, 1942, in Libby to Roy and Margaret (Lewis) Maness. A Memorial Service for Beth will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, at the Troy United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the care of Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home of Libby.

Janice I. Ringsbye was born March 26, 1943, in Galena, Kan., to William Earl and Hazel Fern (Morey) House, Jr. She passed from this life on Sept. 6, 2015, after an extended illness in Post Falls, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents in 1956 and 1999, respectively, and by her sister Linda Gail (House) Diamond in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her husbands: Frank Oleson, Earl Carter, John Urdahl and Ragnar Ringsbye.

Chris “Chauncey” Sauer, with his family by his side, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 7, 2015, due to complications from an aneurysm. Chauncey was born on Oct. 31, 1934, to Christian and Francis Sauer in Cass Lake, Minn. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Charles and his father Christian. He is survived by his mother Francis Sauer; his brother John (Judy) Sauer and his sister Pat (Bruce) Carrier. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Marlyn and their five children, Cindy (Doug) Saros, Christy (Art) Pine, Cathy (Rich) Noble, Carol Sauer and David (Darcy) Sauer, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
William DeShazer
William E. DeShazer 82, a lifelong resident of the Kootenai Valley passed away Sept. 1, 2015, after losing his battle with asbestosis and lung cancer. Bill was born July 27, 1933, in Rexford to Olen and Edna DeShazer. He was born the eldest of six children. Bill grew up in the Libby and Rexford area, where he grew to love the Kootenai Valley. Bill had a full life.

Recent weather patterns, with cooler temperatures and increased moisture, have prompted fire officials to lift all fire restrictions implemented across northwest Montana since mid-summer.

Two men involved in a single-car, alcohol-related accident on Pipe Creek Road Sunday evening have died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Tensions escalate between city and union
Relations between the City of Libby and the city workers’ union took a turn for the worse at Tuesday evening’s City Council meeting. Unofficial union spokesman Kenny Rayome, Jr. told the council they shouldn’t be voting to approve the city employees’ salaries for the fiscal year because negotiations between Libby Mayor Doug Roll and the union had stalled.

City Council adopts new fiscal year budget
The Libby City Council adopted the city’s budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal year at Tuesday evening’s City Council meeting. The budget calls for a cut in total city expenditures of nearly $800,000 from 2014-2015 spending. The city spent $12,050,142 last year and has budgeted for $11,271,626 for the current fiscal year, which runs from July 1, 2015, until June 30, 2016.
Iran deal is grave national security mistake
The Iranian nuclear deal is perhaps the greatest national security mistake of our time and represents a clear and present danger to America and our allies. The idea of legitimizing the nuclear capabilities of Iran – the leading sponsor of global terrorism who is directly responsible for the killing of thousands of Americans – is reckless. The United States does not need this deal; Iran needs this deal.

Kris Knute Hedahl, 66, classified as a Level 3 sexual offender, has recently moved to an address on McKay Street in Libby, according to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office issued Thursday morning. Hedahl was released from the Montana State Prison Sept. 1 and registered in Lincoln County Sept. 3.

I’m Miss Tabitha Maust and I am a brand new teacher! This is my first year in my own classroom and I teach 9th and 11th grade English language arts and a mixed grade class of Spanish. I am originally from Billings, and I graduated from Montana State University Billings (MSUB). I live here with my boyfriend Daniel and my cocker spaniel Dante. Three environmental groups have filed suit in federal court to stop progress on the Montanore Mine project. Commissioners adopt budget

This summer’s fire season, characterized as “historic” by fire officials, was exacerbated by high, gusty winds Saturday afternoon, resulting in temporary evacuations in parts of Libby. The winds brought rain as well, though, which prompted the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office to rescind the evacuation orders Sunday morning.

The wild is waiting for those with the wind in their veins
For more than a thousand nights, I had slept in the same position in my beloved mummy bag: left forearm squashed between my belly and the ground, right hand cushioning my head, left leg straight down and right leg tucked up almost to my chin. Thirteen springs, summers and falls had seen me working in the woods in all types of wild places and sleeping wherever it made sense that week. There was no other way I would have preferred to spend my time than roaming in the wild.
