Now, how about Tester for president?

I was pleased to see the weight of the presidency couldn’t tip the scales against our Senator Tester, maybe the only real farmer in the Senate. Jon won because of his work record, of course, although a few more visits by the presidential entourage may have beaten authenticity and common sense. To the wary Montanan, Trump’s charisma was getting thing by the third or fourth visit. More than anything, this defeat makes Donald Trump, not the presidency, look weak. A working man from a remote state turns back an expensive political vendetta by the Republican darling Trump.

As we reach the holiday season, it’s not uncommon for someone not in a relationship to feel a need to be with a significant other, or at least to have someone to take with him or her to that office party or family gathering. Shop local, dine local to support your small-business heroes

Every year after Thanksgiving, Americans kick off the holiday shopping season with big stores advertising deal after deal. Not long ago, Americans during the holiday season typically would visit locally-owned small retailers in a downtown area to purchase all of their gifts. Business owners would decorate their shops with lights and ornaments or create elaborate window displays to grab the imagination of a passerby and encourage them inside. It was a magical time of year, and many of us still hold on to those memories today.

Let us aim to be a best place

Days ago, I hunted up the reservoir. It had rained overnight, and larch needles and leaves had been falling. I took a road over a ridge to the south. As I reached the top, the road swung toward the southwest. Clouds brightened. I drove slowly. The landscape changed as the sun peeked through the clouds as I entered an opening. I saw a gold road, thick with larch needles. I stopped, whispering, “Oh, my God, look at this.” Every fallen log, stump, rock was gold. I was hunting, of course, but there were no tracks. I was glad. All seemed perfect, spiritual, quiet, beautiful. Peace.

Don't vote for the 'untouchables'

How can you vote for a man who won’t shake your hand? U S. Rep. Greg Gianforte, U.S. Sen. Steve Daines and State Auditor and senatorial candidate Matt Rosendale have fled the time-honored public meeting for the safety of invitation-only events and the electronic shields of telephone and video. It’s no crime to have moved to Montana from somewhere else, but these men seem to have imported a shared fear of our general public.

People of faith must support I-185

As people of faith, we believe we have the moral obligation to take care of our neighbors. Often that means helping individuals by donating clothes after a house fire or providing dinner after the loss of a loved one. However, sometimes we have the rare opportunity to help thousands of our friends and neighbors across the state. We have that chance now by voting for I-185.

Sen. Jon Tester protects interests of service members

Forty-six U.S. Representatives, 49 U.S. Senators and 33 state attorney generals, including Democrats, Republicans and Independents, signed letters defending the Military Lending Act, which was passed after the DOD found that servicemembers were disproportionately subjected to unfair high-cost, predatory lending.

Vote yes on I-185 to help the needy

As a senior citizen and concerned caregiver, I feel we must vote to keep funds from being cut or canceled for Montanans who need them most. Things like home-based caregiving and Medicaid-funded services for our veterans are important. Funds for our seniors and wages for their caregivers must not continue to be diminished. More seniors and vets need care, not less.

Local Republicans should denounce ad

I am writing to endorse the sentiments expressed in the letter published in the Western News on Tuesday, Oct. 30, by Laurie Boehler Walsh, responding to the “divisive” Republican ad about “Republicans vs. Others.” The ad demonizes any of us who are not “true Republicans” and accuses us of “corruption, waste and criminality,” among other evils.

I-185 would preserve sufficient caregiving

A cautionary tale in support of I-185

Have you ever seen someone die from emphysema or lung cancer? I have in the case of the former affliction. Emphysema came to my then-56-year-old wife Mary, who became a more avid cigarette smoker after the accidental death of our 10-year-old son Richard. It was her way of enduring the pain caused by our loss.

Public land: America's best idea

I wish all Montanans could travel the world and experience its diversity of nature and culture. Though America is a very special country, we are young and far from perfect, and there is so much to be learned from other places and peoples with much longer histories than Europeans in America.

Sen. Tester supports Montana trade

I am a third-generation farmer and rancher in Montana. My family has a long history of working the land and raising cattle. I understand full well the negative impact low commodity prices have on agriculture and the communities that rely on agriculture to survive. The ag economy of the United States is in increasing trouble, and one only needs to see the following stats to understand this.
