County set to receive $2.4 million
Lincoln County’s budget is about to take a hit of more than two million dollars, but unlike most budget hits experienced by the county of late, this one is on the positive side of the ledger. Late Tuesday evening the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to reauthorize funding of the Secure Rural Schools program and to issue payments to the eligible counties within 45 days.
Who is Hecla?
Revett Mining Inc. and Hecla Mining last month announced an agreement reached March 26 under which Hecla will acquire Revett and all its assets. The $20 million agreement still requires regulatory filings and final approval by Revett shareholders, but is expected to close some time in June.
Two plead guilty in local theft cases
Two Libby men pulled over in the early morning hours of Feb. 16 in a stolen 1999 white Ford Explorer were offered separate plea agreements by Lincoln County prosecutor Bernard Cassidy in District Court on Monday. The vehicle contained numerous items stolen from vehicles in the same neighborhood from which the Explorer was taken.

Libby Baptist Church celebrates 50 years
On the front page of The Western News on Feb. 11, 1965, there was an announcement of the purchase of 60,000 square feet of land immediately west of Dr. Woodrow Nelson’s office on Cedar Street in Libby. The purpose: a new home for the Libby Baptist Mission, which had been meeting at the home of the Rev. Henry A. Tidwell, Jr. at 510 Nevada Avenue.

I don’t know what I said on the old box call but he sure liked it and came runnin’ down the hill behind me. I was in some pretty thick timber and didn’t use the decoys. Happened so fast I barely had time to enjoy the hunt! I took the pictures a couple hours later when the rain stopped. Good turkey though, 21lbs. and a 10 inch beard. Can’t wait until fall to drop another one!

High-speed chase ends in Lincoln County
A high-speed chase originating near Kila ended in Lincoln County Monday afternoon with the arrest of Frank Maycumber near mile marker 50 on westbound Highway 2.
EPA releases vague institutional controls
Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency provided the first look at the property restrictions and other regulations to be imposed upon the citizens of Lincoln County once the agency packs up and leaves. However, the vaguely-worded document created more questions than answers about the agency’s long-term plans for Libby.

In the first inning of Libby’s softball game against Whitefish on Wednesday at Remp Field it was clear the Bulldogs were in a dogfight they couldn’t win. The Lady Loggers blasted out of the gates to an 11-point lead after the first frame on their way to a 26-0 win. The mercy rule ended the game after five innings in the first conference game of the season for both teams.

The Montana State Senate recently passed a bill reallocating a portion of the state mine license tax revenue to a fund established to help bear the cost of environmental clean-up in Libby. The bill, Senate Bill 20, was sponsored by Sen. Chas Vincent of Libby and passed the Senate unanimously March 31.

Forest Service gears up for fire season
