Forest Fire
In this photo released by the U.S. Forest Service, the Wildland Fire burns along Nichols Creek Saturday, March 28, 2015, near Red Lodge, Montana. Authorities evacuated a ski lodge in southern Montana because of a wind-driven wildfire heading toward it. The wildfire was reported about 1:45 p.m. Saturday and had burned an estimated 200 acres of grass and timber about 4 miles west of the community of Red Lodge. The fire began on open private land, but it was driven by winds gusting 35 to 50 mph into the Custer National Forest, where the Red Lodge Mountain Resort ski area is located. I wanted an adventure and I got an adventure
Lying under the oldest cedar tree in our back yard, I begin to reminisce about our trip from the previous weekend; wind-swept peaks, craggy cliffs, and the high alpine midnight-blue lake. It seems dream-like until I shift my achy knees and sunburned skin. I ponder why the truest sense of contentment I have come to know is only achievable while in these wild places. I guess the answer to pure contentment will have to wait, but for now the love for wilderness and our mind-blowing adventures are reason enough to endure achy knees and sunburned skin.

I’m sure we have all had those moments. These are the times we may feel most alive, and so inspired, we often try to capture that moment’s image.

Water compact ensures stability, access to water
The decision that our legislators make on the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe Water Compact could shape the future of our state for decades to come. While many would have you believe the compact only impacts the Flathead and areas west of the Continental Divide, this couldn’t be further from the truth. If the compact fails there will be far-reaching consequences that will be felt by all Montanans, chief of which is the massive cost of litigation not passing the compact would cost water-users.
Boorish behavior from water compact opponents
Having just read Bob Henline’s story “Water Compact Forum Gets Contentious” I feel moved to comment on the sensationalized and somewhat slanted view he presented.
Urge your representatives to support water compact
The CSKT Water Compact has caused quite a bit of stir. Two years ago, we didn’t have an opinion. Since then, we’ve read, listened and evaluated the pros and cons of the issue.
Understanding the Constitution's Supremacy Clause
A recent article in the Daily Inter Lake (Feb. 10) entitled “House Passes Gun-rights Bill” got my attention because of the lack of understanding of the United States Constitution by some Democratic legislators and county sheriffs on the Supremacy Clause, which is Article VI Clause 2, Paragraph 2. It says, in part, “This Constitution and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof . . . shall be the supreme law of the land . . .” This means that the power of Congress and state legislatures are limited to pass ONLY those laws that are in conformance with, or pursuant (in accordance with) to the U.S. Constitution.
Urbanization is government's goal
It appears the agenda of the federal government it to chase the rural residents of the west off their land and into the cities. In our area, they are using phony wildlife endangerment as justification to slow or end logging and mining on federal land. In other areas, fears of global warming are used as justification to regulate fossil fuel producers out of business. In Nevada, ranchers are being chased off federal land because their cattle suddenly pose a threat to the desert tortoise. Offshore drilling for oil in the United States has been mostly curtailed at the same time that Brazil was given foreign aid to develop its offshore oil fields.
