Thursday morning, following her appointment to the Libby City Council, Dejon Raines sat down with The Western News to discuss her qualifications, her drive and her vision for the future of Libby.

Ray Newell Knight, 88, of Troy, passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2015 at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center in Libby of natural causes. He was born Oct. 29, 1926 in Provo, Utah to Ralph W. and Fern (Young) Knight. He grew up and attended school in Orem, Utah, graduating from Orem High School with the Class of 1944. He entered the United States Navy at the age of 18. On September 27, 1948, he married LaDee Peterson. Ray owned his own long-haul truck and drove truck for over 30 years. He retired from truck driving and bought a trailer court in St. Regis, which he managed for 15 years. After selling the trailer court, he moved to Troy. Over the years, Ray enjoyed horses. He was preceded in death by his wife, LaDee.

Funeral services for Victoria Tomlinson, 55, of Sidney, formerly of Libby, were held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Sidney with Pastor Richard Evans officiating. Eighth grade basketball champions
Libby’s eighth-grade basketball team finished their season as the undisputed champions of the world. Maybe not the world, but after going 9-0 during the season, they hosted and won a middle school tournament at the high school by going 3-0 against schools from around the area.

Rotary Club supports community
The Rotary Club of Kootenai Valley has a long reach. They’re involved with building potable water infrastructure in Guatemala and help support the Rotary Polio-Plus campaign to eradicate polio from areas around the world. Not only do they touch the lives of individuals across the globe, but through their student exchange program they also brought Ecuadorian student Walter Briones to Libby.
Troy woman arrested Jan. 9
A 42-year-old Troy woman was arrested on Jan. 9 on felony charges of theft and elder abuse in Hill County. The woman, Lisa L. Cole, is accused of taking in excess of $30,000, along with several power tools from Andrew Horwath.

Troy government review commission begins work
Troy’s Commission of Local Government Review board held their first official meeting at Troy City Hall on Jan. 23, two weeks after being sworn in. The commission consists of three members, Fran McCully, Tony Brown and presiding official Phillip Fisher, who are tasked with researching the structure and operation of Troy’s form of government and comparing it with optional forms to determine if changes should be proposed to voters.

He grew up in Provo and left school early to follow a dream. He joined the United States Navy and served for four years during World War II. That time left a lasting impression on him and he always had a story to tell and a flag to fly. Tommie loved his country and the service he gave.

After meeting and marrying her husband, Clyde, they lived in Missoula and Hamilton before moving to Troy in 1955.

Jo was raised in Collinsville and later moved to San Diego, Calif., where she met her husband, Billy Fore. They were married in November 1967.

“I don’t want to leave,” Scott Savage told his wife, Nicci, as they drove from Troy to Kalispell on Tuesday. Scott got on a plane to Juneau, Alaska, where he would work for two weeks at the Hecla Greens Creek mine before returning to his wife and two elementary age children back in Troy. He may not want to leave, but he does what he has to do.

Jon Jeresek stood in the snow pit he had dug to ground level on a 40-degree slope just off the jeep trail near the top of Turner Mountain. He took out his tool kit that included a collapsible measuring stick, paintbrush, thermometers, shovel, snow saw and an old phone card. Jeresek was showing me how to perform the extended column test, which provides one of several pieces of information about snow conditions that should be ran through what he calls the most powerful computer in the world, the brain, before going into the backcountry during the winter months.

The Kootenai Valley Christian School held their annual Spelling Bee on Jan. 13, in preparation for the Association of Christian Schools International district competition. Students from grades one through eight competed in the event, with a winner and runner-up in each grade advancing to the district competition.

Government should not be in the marriage business
The United States Supreme Court’s announcement on Jan. 16 that it will decide the constitutionality of state-level bans on same-sex marriage has elicited the predictable whining about judicial activism. The Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins pleads “there is nothing in the Constitution that empowers the courts to silence the people and impose a nationwide redefinition of marriage,” neglecting to specify where in the Constitution the government is granted the power to get involved in defining marriage to begin with.
It is time for government investment to Build Montana
As many as 2,000 temporary high-paying blue collar jobs will be created in Montana if the United States government approves the much-publicized Keystone XL pipeline. More than twice as many similar private sector construction jobs, however, will result from state government approval of the Build Montana program proposed by Democratic Governor Steve Bullock and sponsored in the legislature by Republican Rep. Jeff Welborn of Dillon.

Mil (Mildred Ann) Applegate died peacefully in her sleep at The Village Health Care Center on the morning of Jan. 15, 2015. She resided there for the past two years, where she was well-known for her frequent power walks throughout the building and occasionally getting too close to the exits. She was deeply appreciative of the loving care she received there and remained active in a variety of Village programs until her last few days.

Raymond Lee Beardsley, 62, died at his home in Libby on Jan. 12. He was born April 23, 1952, in Browning, and was raised by his adoptive parents, Albert and Doris Beardsley. The family had resided at Whitefish and Columbia Falls before coming to Troy in 1969 and later to Libby in 1978. He had worked as a general laborer at several jobs and also had been a seasonal firefighter. Ray had been a member of the Blackfoot tribe.

Marliese Wilkonski Vaughn, 84, a resident of Libby for the past 60 years, died Thursday evening at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center in Libby. She was born in Strasbourg, France to Joseph and Marie (Wahl) Dolich June 16, 1930. She married Henry Wilkonski on April 30, 1949 in Fontainbleau, France.

Revett Mining Company Inc. announced yesterday its plans to place Troy Mine on care and maintenance status, immediately ending development work and closing milling operations by the end of January. Full shutdown is expected by the end of February.

Kelsey Orr sentenced to two years
Kelsey Nicole Orr, 25, was sentenced to a two-year commitment with the Montana Department of Corrections, which is to include substance abuse treatment, plus a three-year deferred sentence in connection with a guilty plea she entered on burglary and felony drug possession charges in December 2014.

Virus detected in Kootenai River salmon
In November, state fisheries biologists detected a virus in wild spawning kokanee salmon below Kootenai Falls on the Kootenai River. Three Rivers Ranger District received word from a concerned individual that vandalism had occurred at the Ross Creek Cedars day-use area. The “Braided Bridge” a land bridge made of intertwined cedar roots was removed sometime after Halloween. The popular bridge accessed a small island and had been a very popular attraction for families for decades. “The bridge and island no doubt are in many family picture albums, they’re in my family photos as well,” said Dave Thorstenson, recreation manager for Three Rivers Ranger District. “Obviously the intertwined root system appealed to someone’s artistic taste, so much so that they used a chainsaw to remove it,” added Thorstenson.

On January 2, 2015, the staff and physicians at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center welcomed Levi Ray-Carson Webb, son of Maggie Henry and Ryan Webb and brother to Kaydn Webb as the first baby born in 2015. Levi made his entrance at 4:21am, weighing in at 7lbs 7.5oz, and measuring 21 inches long. Dr. Jana Hall of the Northwest Community Health Center was the attending physicians.
Cross-country ski season begins
As twilight fell on Saturday, propane lanterns lit Shorty’s Loop trail at the South Flower Creek Cross-Country Trails southwest of Libby. Greg and Susie Rice, along with Gary Crismon, hung lanterns on trees about every 30 yards, prepared hot cocoa and treats, and had a nice fire prepared to welcome those who enjoyed the first night ski of the season put on by the Kootenai XC Ski Club.
EPA: No contamination from house fire
The Environmental Protection Agency said the fire that ravaged a home on Mineral Avenue in Libby last week did not result in any asbestos contamination.

I wanted to write this letter, as I was recently a patient at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center. I, for a long time, thought of our hospital as a band-aid station and told my family that if I was ever sick to make sure I was taken to Kalispell or Spokane. I now realize how wrong I was.
Increasing federal minimum wage will help the economy
As a restaurant owner operating in four states and looking to expand, I’m happy to see the minimum wage going up in 21 states to kick off the new year. I’d like to see the federal minimum wage increase as well to benefit business and our economy nationwide.

Even though Greenchain wrestlers won two of their dual matches and lost one, they didn’t advance to the second day of competition at the Western Montana Duals in Ronan on Jan. 2. The team didn’t place in the top two of their pool, which would have allowed them to compete in the Saturday matches.

Before his team took the court Friday afternoon against Flathead, Libby coach Jim May stressed offensive performance. “We need to be patient and we have to take care of the ball,” May said.
Loggers fall in nail-biting home opener to Flathead
The Loggers fought hard for three and a half quarters against Flathead in the Ralph Tate Memorial Gym on Friday evening. But, as head coach Josh Bean said just before the game, “it’s going to take a consistent, four-quarter effort.” The Loggers fell short, losing 80-77 in overtime.

It was a rough game for the Troy boys basketball team in their afternoon away game at Thompson Falls on Friday, Jan. 2, and not just for the players.
