The Lady Trojans bounced back from a loss to Eureka on Friday night by beating the Mission Lady Dogs at home Saturday night, 54-44.

With an obvious height advantage, Troy made a concerted effort to get the ball into their taller players hands. “We definitely wanted to get Ms. Becquart involved,” said Troy coach Justin Young. Becquart scored 14 points in the game and Allie Coldwell scored 19 points to lead the Lady Trojans.

Troy used the high-post effectively to setup their offense for much of the game. They also switched up their defense going from a zone to man, to add a somewhat new wrinkle to their game. “We’ve been a pretty zone heavy team, but our girls are realizing they’re athletic enough to play man. It’s good to see them want to play man now,” said Young.

After the teams were even at 10-10 at the end of the first, Troy took command in the second quarter by scoring 16 points to Mission’s five. The teams were pretty evenly matched throughout the second half mainly because of some big 3-pointers by Mission’s guards Irene Lopez and Sydney Castor.

Troy senior Taylor Brown said the team played pretty good against Mission and credits her coach with helping them play loose. “He just wanted us to play ball and not worry about the other stuff, and that’s when we play at our best,” said Brown.

Brown said Young wanted the team to be more aware of their foul situation and limited the team to 14 total fouls for the game. She said the team had gotten in some foul trouble against Eureka.

With Troy now at the midway point of their season, the team needs to pull out a few more victories over the next couple of weeks to get into the playoffs. “I’m confident the girls will tighten the screws down,” Young said. “Hopefully we can get a couple of wins to get some good momentum going towards the end of the season.”

Allie Brown added nine points and Olivia Thomas contributed six for Troy.

The win improved the Lady Trojans to 2-7 for the season.

Irene Lopez scored 15 to lead the Bulldogs, who fell to 0-9.

On Friday, the Lady Trojans got things going in the fourth quarter against Eureka. Unfortunately, it was not enough to overcome a sizeable lead by the Lions who secured a 50-39 victory.

Allie Coldwell led Troy with 14 points in the game with Aurora Becquart chipping in 8 and Allie Brown added 7.
