Buck D. Kidder
Buck D. Kidder, 64, of Troy died Tuesday, July 24, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center from natural causes. Buck was born Oct. 21, 1953, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to Lloyd and Ella (Widner) Kidder. At the age of 17, Buck enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, one month before he was drafted so that he could choose his branch of service. Shortly after his enlistment he earned his GED and was given an honorary diploma from Troy High School. Buck served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force as a 7 Level Jet Engine Mechanic. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for Chapel Cedar and trail maintenance for the U.S. Forest Service. Buck co-owned No Kidding Auto and later would work for World Wide Machine Pipeline division, where he was trained as a padder operator.

The Highway 37 fire remained mapped at 70 acres while containment increased from 40 percent to 60 percent following a Monday morning infrared flight that showed “minimum heat on the fire.”
Frances Glenn
Frances Jane Britton Glenn of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on sunny Sunday, May 6, 2018, surrounded by family, at the age of 87. Jane was born the eldest of two daughters to Edwin and Maria Britton in Macon, Mississippi. She graduated from Macon High School and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Mississippi State College for Women (now known as Mississippi University for Women). In 1950, Jane met Hayden Fox Glenn of Brooksville, Mississippi, at the local swimming pool, and they married Aug. 23, 1953, after his return from serving in the Korean War. They first lived in Starkville, Mississippi, before moving to Marietta, Georgia; Melbourne, Florida; and finally Huntsville, Alabama, where they and their three boys settled on Monte Sano Mountain in 1964.

Releasing WSAs will improve access for Montana sportsmen
It’s a simple fact: Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) have resulted in less access for Montana sportsmen and sportswomen. In a literal sense, these public lands are essentially locked up. With hunting and fishing access becoming more precious each year, it only makes sense to review the WSAs in Montana, and release those that are not suitable to become full-blown Wilderness.

One of 20 remote lightning-caused fires reaches 150-200 acres Monday
One of 20 fires caused by lightning in remote parts of the Kootenai National Forest over the weekend grew to 150-200 acres by Monday afternoon, prompting the planned closure of roads and trails near that and at least one other fire.

Joseph G. Arts, 71, died on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at his home in Troy of natural causes. He was born at an early age in St. John’s Hospital in Helena on Dec. 18, 1946. He stayed there for three months doing what babies do best until he was adopted by his parents Dr. Joseph B. and Bernece Arts. His sister Susan was adopted two years later. This was one of the best things that ever happened to him.

Arnold was born in Riverbank, California, on Dec. 16, 1937 to Feliciano and Reyes (Rodriguez) Ulloa. A celebration of Arnold’s life will be held at Bell Tower Funeral Home at 3398 E. Jenalan Ave. in Post Falls, Idaho, on Friday, Aug. 10 from noon to 3 p.m.

Cleanup plan due today for Pine Tree Plaza in Troy
Today is the last day for Charles Curtis to respond to the Lincoln County Health Department with a plan for remediation of the former Pine Tree Plaza building on Highway 2, which has been sitting mostly empty since a 2013 fire gutted the structure.

Libby wildfire consumes 30 acres by Thursday evening
A wildfire four miles northwest of Libby reached 30 acres in less than three hours Thursday afternoon, potentially threatening power transmission lines and requiring the precautionary deployment of a specially trained and equipped firefighting team as the fire moved to within 1.5 miles of a former vermiculite mine.
Zulu fire First notable wildfire of season 50 percent contained Thursday
The area’s first notable wildfire of 2018 was reported about 50 percent contained Thursday morning, following two days of zero growth and a sustained air and ground attack.

Getting over the jitters and getting the KOAP kids outside
Boy do I have some very interesting wilderness experiences. The summer going into my senior year, I applied for the Kootenai Outdoor Adventure Program (KOAP) to help mentor kids ranging from sixth through eighth grade. We had multiple day hikes going up to some swimming holes, had fun days at a lake house including archery competitions and kayaking down a lazy river, and even played on a rope swing that I may or may not have broke as I was using it. But the day that everyone was looking forward to, myself included, was the four-day overnight backpacking trip.
