Consistency, confidence dog Libby

The Loggers faced a series of defeats in two double headers Saturday and Wednesday. Individual players continue to demonstrate their strengths, but Libby continues to struggle to pull it all together.

In their doubleheader Saturday against the Cranbrook, Libby had a few promising moments. After Tim Carvey pitched a no-hit opening half inning, the first run went to Libby with a sacrifice fly from Quade Anderson that brought Carvey home.

The Bandits answered with two run in the second, but the Loggers came back with three to reestablish the lead, 4-2.

The game seemed to be an even match as it progressed, with scoreless inning after scoreless inning in rapid progression, but the game unraveled for the Loggers in the sixth as Shayne Walker started to wear down on the mound.

Carvey came in to pitch, ending the inning with a strikeout, but Cranbrook flipped the lead in their favor, 7-4, before the rally could be cut off.

In the sixth, Walker made it to third with one out, but a Bandit double play squashed Logger hopes for a comeback.

Three more Cranbrook runs in the seventh sealed the 10-4 win, with no Libby response in the bottom of the inning.

Yet, with such a close game and a few easily corrected errors for the Loggers, there seemed hope for the game two.

The teams battled through two runless innings, until the Bandits were able to load the bases in the top of the third and make three runs off a sacrifice fly and an error.

But a homerun from Carvey in the bottom of the third gathered in Chris Auge as well, bringing the Loggers by two runs. A sacrifice fly by Garrett Gollahon sent in Jeff Offenbecher to tie the game up 3-3.

The fourth saw a similar back and forth, with a series of Libby errors joining a walk to put Cranbrook back in the lead, 5-3.

The Loggers were down, but not out. With Cole Murphy and Austin McCully on first and second, Carvey hit a line drive single, which a series of Bandit errors turned into an inside the park homerun as all three Loggers reached home with ease.

But the Bandits knuckled down on their defense in the fifth and sixth, and with 11 runs for Cranbrook, the Loggers fell 16-6 in the end.

Against Glacier, Libby did not fair nearly as well.

Despite ongoing improvement in Moxley Rosler-Begalke’s pitching as he slogged through all seven innings of the first game, the Logger defense seemed lost and disjointed at moments early on, with throws that went wide and players unmoving as the ball rolled toward them at times.

Libby did take the lead briefly in the first inning, with a run for Offenbecher off of Gollahon getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and another for Walker when Ayden Williamson hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

But as the Loggers failed to field plays in a timely manner, Glacier moved into a 6-2 lead by the end of the inning.

Walker came through with a homerun in the bottom of the third as the first batter to the plate, but one run had little weight against the growing Glacier lead, leaving the score 9-3 Glacier.

Libby managed to keep the Twins at bay in the fourth, with Roesler-Begalke catching a fly in foul territory for the first out. But Libby was unable to make progress when they came to bat.

In the fifth, Gollahon singled off a grounder to left field, sending Walker home, bringing the score to 13-4 and preventing an early end to the game. But the Loggers were unable to make progress with the remaining innings.

In Game two, the Twins built up to a gradual lead in the early innings. In the bottom of the first, Carvey scored on a Twins error, tying the score 1-1.

But that was to be the only Logger run of the game as piled on run-by-run until it was 4-1, Glacier, in the bottom of the third.

The Twins broke out in the fourth with a homerun from Forrest Kobelt, sending them into a 6-1 lead with, and making way for a seven-run inning for Glacier.

A final Glacier run in the top of the fifth broke the ten-run barrier, and with no Logger response in the bottom of the inning, secured the win for the Twins.

Despite the games being such decisive defeats, both final scores against Glacier are improvements over the scoreless losses the Loggers saw against the Twins less than two weeks ago.

“I think Moxley did a great job pitching in that first game,” said Manager Kelly Morford. “The scoreboard didn’t show it, but he really kept them off balance, which is what we wanted to do.”

Yet, with several plays falling apart in the fielding, strong pitching wasn’t enough.

Morford said the team makes some great plays and really perform well at times, but still haven’t figured out the consistency to make those plays dependably.

“We turn double plays and make great plays when we’re down by ten, but in one-run ball games, we just clench up and don’t,” he said.
