Loggers suffer defeat at Bitterroot doubleheader

The Loggers faced the Bitterroot Red Sox in a doubleheader Saturday at Bitterroot, coming away with two losses, but coming back from a crushing defeat in the first game to put up a better performance in the second.

In the first game of the night, the Red Sox walloped the Loggers 27-0 in five innings, scoring runs in the double digits in both the first and second innings. Bitterroot’s Matt Brown hit a homerun in the bottom of the first to make the score 10-0 with two RBIs, but most of the game came down to a few aggressive moves, a handful of Libby errors and a relentless march around the bases by the Red Sox.

In the top of the second, Moxley Roesler-Begalke made it on base with a single off a hard ground ball to right field, and Austin McCully walked, but a strikeout ended the half inning with both players left on base.

Chris Auge made it to first in the top of the third off an error on an infield grounder, and Quade Anderson walked, but Libby was unable to get past second base once again.

Roesler-Begalke made it on base again in the top of the fourth with a ground ball to shortstop, but was tagged out stealing second before the final out.

In the top of the fifth, Jeff Offenbecher made the most progress the Loggers would see in the game, hitting a double off a line drive to center field, and moving Tim Carvey -- who had been walked -- to third.

Despite little time to recover between, Libby pulled something out in the second game, even taking the lead for a brief time in the first inning.

Carvey led off with a triple at the top of the batting order, hitting a fly to right field, and Quade Anderson brought him home with a sacrificial fly in the same direction.

With two outs and bases loaded, Caden Williams singled on a line drive to center field, netting two RBIs when Shayne Walker and Ayden Williamson made it across the plate, but the half inning ended with Roesler-Begalke tagged out advancing to third.

Yet, they were to be the last runs scored for the Loggers.

The Red Sox answered in the bottom of the first with five runs, taking the lead 4-3 with a sacrificial ground out from Garret Hunt that brought Hunter Omlid home.

In the top of the second, the Loggers pushed back, and Alex Svendsbye tried to take advantage of a double by Carvey to make for home, but was tagged out advancing.

The Loggers held the Red Sox to a single run in the second, and Anderson caught a fly in right field to end the half inning. But a ground out and two pop-outs by Libby in the bottom of the inning left the score 6-3, Bitterroot.

By the end of the top of the third, the Red Sox were up 12-3. In the bottom of the inning, Roesler-Begalke was walked, and made it to third after Svendsbye singled on a line drive to left field. But both players were left on base after Bitterroot’s Tristen Lewis struck out Carvey.

In the fourth, Williams cut the Red Sox off after two runs by striking out Garrick Richarson for the final out.

Though Walker made it on base with a single on a hard ground ball to shortstop in the top of the fifth, he was tagged on a fielder’s choice for the final out of the game.
