I hiked down off the mountain at 3:44 in the morning. It was the day after the summer solstice and there was already a thin line of light blue along the horizon. I moved quickly and carefully down the trail, guided by my headlamp and the downhill movement of gravity. I stopped suddenly, pulled by an invisible force in the darkness.

Opland earns post-season honors

John Patrick “Pat” Williams
He led the successful effort to save the Bob Marshall Wilderness from oil and gas exploration and banned geothermal energy drilling near Yellowstone. In a 1987 floor speech supporting wilderness protection, he famously warned, “We’re not proposing wilderness for wilderness’ sake — we’re holding back the concrete tide that already threatens our birthright.”

John L. Beebe, 90, a longtime Libby resident, died peacefully at home Monday, April 15, 2013. He was born July, 6 1922, in Eureka to Russell and Julia (Haitt) Beebe. John spent his early years in Eureka.
