William J. (Bill) Buyske passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 8, 2019. Bill was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Oct. 16, 1926. Bill led a full life and loved telling stories about the adventures he had as a youth through his adult life. He married his life partner, Jennie Jo Hamar, on March 19, 1949.

Nicholas D. Ferguson, 90, of Libby, passed away Monday, Aug. 19, 2019 of natural causes at his home in Libby. He was born Jan. 27, 1929 in a country farm home two miles north of Oregon, MO, the third surviving child of John and Ina (Field) Ferguson. A couple years later his brother, Jerry, joined the family and they grew up in a two-story home with a wood burning stove in the front room. Nick walked one mile to the old country grade school, sometimes clamping on ice skates and skating across the fields to school.

Data shows distribution of pain pills in Montana
Recently released data from the Drug Enforcement Administration shows more than 245 million legally-prescribed hydrocodone and oxycodone were supplied to Montana from 2006 to 2012, with Lincoln County receiving the most pills per person per year statewide during that time stretch at 61 pills per person.

Deal protects elk habitat on Montana's Rocky Mountain Front
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation recently brokered a land transaction that will permanently protect 442 acres of wildlife and riparian habitat near Augusta along Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front.
2,400-acre prescribed burn planned for Cabinet District
A prescribed burn of up to 2,400 acres is planned for the Cabinet Ranger District of the Kootenai Forest later this fall. The project is associated with the Minton-Trout Project, with the purpose of improving forage habitat for big game and to reduce hazardous fuels in the East Fork and West Fork Trout Creek, and Attlebury Creek drainages.
Easements could protect habitat, ensure public access
The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission recently unanimously approved the acquisition by the state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks of the Kootenai Forestlands conservation easement.
Kootenai Harvest Festival set for Sept. 14

Mob takes off in cargo van
A caller thought it was suspicious when he saw about 20 people jump into the back of a U-Haul-type van headed westbound on U.S. 2, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office logs. Officers investigated and found that the van was being used to transport workers to a hotel in Troy after their original vehicle broke down.

She was raised on her family ranch by her parents Theodore and Barbara Bruha. She was the youngest of seven children. Theresa road horseback 6 1/2 miles to a one-room school house growing up. She attended high school in Baker and graduated in 1957.

George Raymond Cochran, 87, died on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019 at Libby Care Center. He was born at La Junta, Colorado into a family that raised cattle. Being a cowboy with his father and brother started his enthusiasm for the outdoors. The family moved to Hysham, Montana which instigated his love of the state. He developed lifelong friends and had great anticipation for his high school reunions.

Legal Notice Notice of Availability of a Draft Environmental Assessment Overman Western Stone has filed an application with the Department of Environmental Quality for an operating permit under the Metal Mine Reclamation Act. The operating permit would authorize the quarrying of masonry stone on private land owned by Jerry Paul Overman, located on Eagle View Road, approximately 15 miles northwest of Noxon, MT (Section 17, T28N, R33W), in Sanders County. The operation would mine a talus slope to produce masonry stone for use in home construction. Approximately 1,250 tons of rock material would be excavated annually. The permit area would cover about 20 acres with up to 15 acres to be disturbed. Approximately six to eight workers would be employed. hCopies of the draft EA can be reviewed at DEQ's office at 1520 E. 6th Ave., in Helena, MT.
