Yaak School students Ani Vick, 5th grade, and Jasmine Bilbrey, 3rd grade, both took second place for northwest Montana with entries in the 2019 Keep Montana Green Poster Contest. Their submitted art was not returned, but they each chose a favorite artwork they have done to pose with. The theme they painted for the contest was to increase awareness of wildfires and their causes. Vick painted a picture looking up into a forest from the ground, with fire consuming the trees. Bilbery painted a picture of people evacuating a house threatened by fire, as well as campers running from their tent in the midst of a fire. Both said that their paintings were inspired in part by their experiences living in the Yaak. (Ben Kibbey/The Western News)
