Only until a few seconds remained did the Troy Trojans football team run out of hope.

The Trojans, who trailed the Victor Pirates since early in the second quarter, were knocking on the door seeking a touchdown and possible game-tying conversion.

But a Pirates interception near the goal-line with a few seconds left sealed a 54-46 win for the visitors Saturday afternoon in Troy.

That the Trojans (0-1) had a chance at all to force overtime was a testament to their perseverance.

The Trojans faced a number of double-digit deficits, including 32-14, 40-20 and 46-26. But they kept battling to the end before Victor could celebrate the win.

The turnover-plagued game saw the ball exchange hands 10 times. But the Trojans had seven and it was a definite cause of their defeat.

Several touchdowns for both squads followed turnovers.

The first - a Mason Crowe interception - helped set up a 3-yard TD run by senior quarterback and receiver Carson Orr. It allowed Troy to take a 6-2 lead following a safety by Victor.

But two possessions later, a Victor interception quickly led to a Pirates TD and a 10-6 lead with 10:13 left in the second quarter. The Trojans spent the rest of the game playing catchup.

Three minutes later, another Victor TD made it 16-6.

But Orr answered with a 60-yard TD run and the conversion to make it a 16-14 score.

Orr had a monster game for the Trojans. He scored six touchdowns, three running and three receiving. He also threw a TD pass and added a pair of two 2-point conversions, meaning he had a hand in all 46 Trojan points.

Orr had recovered the onside kick and made a 20-yard catch that put the Trojans in position to possibly tie the game. He also forced a fumble, intercepted a pass and nearly had a second interception.

Freshman Maddux Stow also played well as he split time at quarterback and receiver with Orr. He threw three TD passes, the longest was 70 yards. He also had another completion of 20 yards. Stow caught passes of 16, 20 and 12 yards, had an 18-yard run and recovered a teammate’s fumble.

Troy senior Gunnar Fisher had a 59-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter from Orr to bring the Trojans within six points, 46-40. Junior Braxton Pinnard also recovered a Victor fumble on a kickoff.

Troy plays at Superior Friday before returning home to host St. Regis on Sept. 12.
