Several Memorial Day events planned in south Lincoln Co.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 97 will hold its annual Poppy Drive Friday, May 23, in Libby.
Auxiliary members will be at various locations throughout the city to distribute poppies and collect donations to help support area veterans and their families in times of need. The memorial poppies are handmade by disabled Veterans for annual distribution across the country.
Auxiliary volunteers will be distributing poppies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ace Hardware, Empire Foods, Family Dollar, Rosauer’s and Save Rite West. Donations from poppy distribution go directly toward the rehabilitation of Veterans, rehabilitation of hospitalized Service personal waiting for discharge, transportation of Veterans to and from VA facilities, Veteran gift shop for Veterans at VA facilities and other projects associated with the American Legion Auxiliary Outreach Programs.
Official Poppy Girl Paisley Woody presented the first Poppy of the drive Thursday, May 15, 2025, to Libby Mayor Peggy Williams at the Lincoln County Veterans Memorial in Riverfront Park.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 97 will hold a celebration for the statue known as Libby’s cemetery angel known as “Remembrance.”
It will be in the Libby Cemetery at the site of the statue. The guest speaker will be Morgan Hayes, the 2025 recipient of the Auxiliary's $500 scholarship. Morgan's grandfather served his country in the Vietnam War and her great-grandfather served in World War II.
The ceremony includes live music by musicians Edwina Smith and Patty Burlingame, a prayer lead by Justin Robinson, keynote address, and the placing of Memorial wreaths at the Angel by American Legion Auxiliary president Sandy Demplewolf and a Gold Star mother. The ceremony concludes with the playing of Taps.
At 1 p.m. Sunday, May 25, the Arthur J Rambo Bridge Dedication will be held at 1 p.m. in Riverfront Park. The public is invited to attend and a special invitation is extended to students who have received the Arthur J Rambo Memorial Scholarship through the years.
Members of the community are invited to share some of their thoughts, memories and even advice about their own Memorial Day.
