Troy softball drops three straight but holds strong at 10-3
The Troy Lady Trojans softball team hit a tough stretch last week, dropping three straight games against strong competition before claiming a 7-5 win at Plains Tuesday.
Autumn Fisher's two-run inside-the-park home run was the difference in the Class B matchup.
Fisher’s homer drove in Halle Wallace and put the Trojans (11-3) up 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Ellah Wallace added another run in the inning, scoring on a passed ball.
Plains (3-13) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth as Bri Kulawinski came home on an error and Karissa French drove in one on a groundout to first.
Leslie Gravier shut down the Trotters late, going five innings in relief. She allowed two runs on three hits and struck out eight.
Halle Wallace started in the circle and went two innings, allowing three runs and fanning three.
Troy opened the rough patch at home on Thursday, April 24, against perennial powerhouse Florence-Carlton. The Lady Falcons showed why they’re one of the top programs in the state, taking both games of a doubleheader by scores of 12-0 and 5-0.
In the opener, Florence-Carlton jumped on Troy early, plating eight runs across the first two innings. The Lady Trojans struggled to keep pace against the Falcons' relentless offense and sharp pitching. Halle Wallace and Ellah Wallace provided the only hits for Troy in the five-inning contest.
Halle Wallace pitched all five innings for Troy, giving up 14 hits and 12 runs, though only eight were earned, as the Lady Trojans committed six defensive errors behind her.
In the nightcap, Troy’s defense tightened up, but the offense was again held in check. Florence-Carlton’s pitchers limited Troy to just two hits—singles from Autumn Fisher and Ellah Wallace—as the Lady Trojans fell 5-0.
Despite the loss, Troy saw a strong pitching effort from Leslie Gravier, who held the Falcons to just two hits over six innings. Control issues proved costly, however, as Florence-Carlton capitalized on eight walks and timely hitting to generate all the offense they needed.
Looking to bounce back, Troy traveled to St. Ignatius on Saturday for a matchup against Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC). In a high-scoring contest, Troy fought hard but ultimately came up short, falling 11-8.
The Lady Trojans struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They added three more runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to briefly take a 6-3 lead. However, MAC answered with a seven-run fifth inning to pull ahead for good.
Troy’s bats came alive in the game, totaling 10 hits. Autumn Fisher had a monster day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and a home run, driving in four runs. Ellie Borgmann added two hits and an RBI, while Kirsti Jellesed, Tana Grant, Halle Wallace, Hailey Dungan, and Ellah Wallace all contributed hits.
In the circle, Halle Wallace started and pitched four innings, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits. Gravier came in for relief and pitched two innings, allowing two runs and striking out three.
