Troy Trojan tennis gears up for spring season
It takes drive and hunger to compete in any sport and for the Troy Trojan tennis program, those qualities are apparent.
As the team enters the 2025 spring season, they bring with them a mix of youthful energy and growing experience. Last year’s campaign was a testament to their rapid development as two singles players and one doubles team advanced to the state tournament, somewhat out of nowhere.
Now, with another year of competition under their belts, the Trojans are on more people’s radar.
Head Coach Ed Sedler has been impressed with the progress his players have made in a short period.
"The increase in skill last season was amazing," Sedler said. "We had no seniors and all of our players were either first- or second-year competitors. Despite that, we still managed to send multiple players to state."
With a roster full of returning athletes, the Trojans are looking to build on last season’s success. Sedler stresses the importance of team depth and competition, noting that the Lady Trojan squad, in particular, boasts a strong lineup.
"We don’t have any stars yet," he noted. "But this Lady Trojan team is very deep and very competitive. We will put eight solid players on the court every week."
Rather than focusing on individual accolades, the team’s philosophy remains centered on continuous improvement. Sedler encourages his athletes to strive for growth each day, with an eye on larger team goals such as a division title and a strong performance at state.
"The only expectation I ever have is that our team will strive to improve," Sedler said. "If we keep working hard, the results will follow."
While the competitive landscape of Class B/C tennis can change from year to year, Troy has positioned itself as a team to watch. Their work ethic, combined with an increasing level of skill, makes them a formidable opponent on the court.
A key moment in the season will be Troy’s home invitational, scheduled for May 2-3. This event, which will bring in competition from across the area, is an opportunity for the Trojans to showcase their talent in front of their home crowd. Play will begin at 11 a.m. May 2 and resume at 9 a.m. May 3, which will also serve as Senior Day, celebrating the contributions of the team’s veteran players.
With a strong foundation and a dedicated roster, the Trojan tennis program is poised for another exciting season. Expect a spring filled with determination, hard-fought matches, and continued progress from this promising group of athletes.
Troy opens the season Thursday, March 27 at Mission. Their home opener is Tuesday, April 8 against Clark Fork, Idaho.
