Thompson SAR offers free avalanche safety course Feb. 21-22
David Thompson Search and Rescue is hosting a free public avalanche safety training Feb. 21-22.
The Friday, Feb. 21 class will be held at 7 p.m. at the rescue organization’s building adjacent to Riverfront Park at 301 City Service Road, Libby. The Saturday, Feb. 22 session will take place at 8 a.m. at the Lower Keeler Snowmobile Trailhead, located off National Forest Service Road 473.
The two-day course, which is open to the public, is designed for snow enthusiasts who want to learn how to recognize, manage and minimize avalanche hazards. It includes how to properly use safety gear such as a beacon, shovel and probe.
Participants will learn the basics of avalanche safety, identify avalanche terrain and type, basic snowpack analysis, tests and interpretation and basic rescue techniques.
