George Arthur Clough

George Arthur Clough,77, passed away on August 22, 2025, at the Libby Care Center after a long battle with cancer. 

George was born on Dec. 5, 1947, to Arthur and Leah Clough in Libby, Montana. He graduated from Libby High School in 1966.

Shortly after high school, George enlisted in the United States Navy. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1970.

Following his military service, George earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the University of Montana. Throughout his working life, he held various positions, ultimately retiring in 2010 as an Adult Parole and Probation Officer for the State of Montana. He also served as a firearms instructor for the state. Earlier in his career, while working for Montana Job Service, he met and married Joan Riebe.

George was passionate about the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting, camping, skiing and horseback riding. He was a charter member of the Libby Volunteer Ambulance Service, a member of the Libby Volunteer Firemen and served on the Turner Mountain Ski Patrol. He was also active with the Back Country Horsemen.

George is survived by his wife Joan; his brother Charles (Ann Brownback); his sister Nancy Rooney (Michael); nieces Sonya Bitterman (children and grandchildren) and Karla Allen (Brad and her children); as well as stepchildren Michael Riebe (Debbie and children and grandchildren) and Corinna Stone (Michael and children and grandchildren), along with numerous cousins.
