The onus of Medicare cuts

| August 29, 2025 7:00 AM

Republicans are cutting Medicare. They don’t want you to know.

When Republicans passed Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” (which is anything but), they knew that up to 17 million Americans would lose their healthcare. Much of that is attributed to Medicaid cuts and the refusal to renew subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, which is skyrocketing premiums for private health insurance.

What they don’t want you to know is that Medicare cuts were part of the deal – just not on paper.

Medicare provides affordable health insurance to Americans 65 years old or older. Americans could see half a trillion dollars in Medicare cuts between 2027 and 2034. And isn’t that a convenient timeline? All of these devastating cuts don’t click into place until after the 2026 midterm elections.

Our Congressmen – Senators Daines and Sheehy, Reps. Zinke and Downing – knew this would happen. A 2010 law requires broad cuts to federal programs if legislation is passed that raises the national deficit. The “Big Beautiful Bill” raises the debt by $3.4 TRILLION.

If Congress refuses to intervene, these sweeping Medicare cuts will go into effect.

Republicans swore up and down that they wouldn’t cut Medicare. Zinke even touted the lack of obvious Medicare cuts after the bill passed. Either Republicans knew Medicare would get cut on the back end, or they don’t know how to do their jobs. Both are concerning.

Under Republican leadership, Grandma and Grandpa will get worse healthcare for higher prices.
