Friends of Scotchman Peaks plan trail work days

There are still late summer volunteer opportunities for folks interested in helping keep area trails open.

As the summer starts to wind down you may be thinking, “Wait! I’m not ready for it to be over.”

For the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness, it’s not! We still have plenty of events throughout the rest of the warm season.

Upcoming and final trail work events of the 2025 season:

- Napoleon Gulch, Saturday, Sept. 13

- Goat Mountain, Saturday, Sept. 27 - National Public Lands Day

- Star Gulch, Saturday, Oct. 4

Trail days consist of using wilderness approved tools such as a cross-cut saw, Polaski, axe and other human powered tools. You don’t need experience to join our trail crew! – just a willingness to learn. Our staff will teach you everything you need to know about trail safety, cross-cut saw techniques, weed identification, trail building methods and more.

For those who want to be involved but don’t want to swing a tool, the Scotchman Peak Trail Ambassador program still has availability through the beginning of October. Come see all the cute baby goats and get on top of Bonner County’s highest point, just over the border in Idaho.

Scotchman Peak Trail Ambassadors hit the trail (Trail #65 to be exact) to make sure hikers know they need to keep their distance from wildlife, especially the native mountain goat herd that lives in the area. We are always looking for volunteers to help us bring this program to life – it’s a great reason to get out for a hike while performing an important conservation service.
