Donald R. Johnston
Donald R. Johnston, 90, of Troy, Montana passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025.
He was born to James and Betty Johnston in 1935 and was raised in Troy with his younger brother Jim. Growing up Don enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and cars. He had many stories of misadventures with childhood friends and cousins. He also helped with the family logging business, did a bit of mining and learned to fix cars at his father’s garage.
After graduating from Troy High School in 1953, Don earned a B.S. in Industrial Arts from Montana State University. He then served in the U.S. Army as a Nike Atlas Defense Launch Officer. After his military service, Don spent more than three decades with Boeing where he worked on projects such as the Apollo Program and the B-2 Bomber.
Don and his lovely wife Sharon had a full life in Seattle, where they had grand adventures with good friends. When Don retired, he and Sharon traveled in their RV for many years. They saw beautiful county and enjoyed their winters in the warm Southwest.
After Sharon’s passing, Don returned to Troy to spend time with family, his Troy friends, and his beloved cat “Rocky.” Don was a giving person who quietly provided care and friendship to those in need. He also helped start and significantly grow the Jim Johnston Memorial Scholarship Fund which has helped many Troy High School graduates. Don was a good man. His friends were forever, his heart was generous and he utilized the blessings he was given.
Don is survived by niece Kelli Flanagan (Tom), nephew Todd Johnston (Angie), cousins Roxie Rubier, Elaine Hammer, MaryJane Cowdrey, Tom and Melisa Cole, Mike Cox, Logan Hammer, and many other loving family members and friends.
There will be a memorial swervice for family and friends at Milnor Lake Cemetery at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025, followed by a gathering at Savage Lake.
