The City of Libby will observe Arbor Day Friday, April 25.

Mayor Peggy Williams will present the Arbor Day proclamation in Firemen’s Memorial Park on Mahoney Road at 4 p.m. The public is invited to participate.

Volunteers will be planting a shade tree in the park. In 2023 a commemorative tree was placed at Firemen's Park to celebrate the City of Libby’s 30th year as Tree City USA.

The planting of trees for Arbor Day has been done over the years with volunteers from the Society of American Foresters, Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Boy and Girl Scouts and community volunteers. City crews will dig holes and provide cleanup.

Urban trees provide shade and cooler temperatures. They also enhance aesthetics for a community, absorbing traffic noise, increasing property values and absorbing carbon dioxide helping decrease atmospheric heating.

As a member of Tree City USA an Arbor Day Planting grant from the Department of Natural Resources provides funding for the purchase of trees, which were provided by the DNRC.

Burr oak and amur maple seedling trees will be available to the public. The main ornamental value of Amur maple is its red fall color and fruit. This is an excellent, low growing tree for small yards.

The stately burr oak is a great choice as a shade tree and for specimen plantings in parks, spacious yards and other large areas.
