Lady Trojans run record to 9-0 with wins over Plains, TFalls
Troy High School softball’s undefeated season continued last weekend after two wins over Plains and Thompson Falls.
Friday, the Lady Trojans hammered the Trotters, 18-3 in four innings. A day later, Troy won a big game over the Lady Blue Hawks, 9-7, in Thompson Falls.
Against Plains, after a scoreless top of the first inning, Troy shortstop Leslie Gravier got the Lady Trojans off to a great start when she hammered a solo home run over the fence in left-center field. Addison Fisher drew a walk, took second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the second inning, Troy showed defense is one of the reasons it’s unbeaten. Rightfielder Ellah Wallace fought the bright sun in here eyes to catch a ball hit to her. Plains’ second batter lined one off pitcher Halle Wallace, but Gravier fielded the ball and fired to first baseman Tana Grant for the second out.
Ellah Wallace then made the defensive play of the game when she caught a sinking liner near the right field line to end the inning.
Troy then turned the game into a rout when it scored nine runs in the bottom of the second to take an 11-0 lead.
Left fielder Autumn Fisher lined a pitch inside the line in the right field corner and she raced home for a 2-run homer. Addison Fisher’s bunt single scored a run to make it 5-0. Kirsti Jellesed reached base and later scored on a wild pitch.
Kylie Cole walked to load the bases. Following a Plains pitching change, Ellie Borgman’s grounder scored the seventh run. Grant lined a single to score two runs. Halle Wallace’s groundout scored a run and another run made it 11-0.
A less-than-stellar defensive performance in the Plains third inning allowed the Trotters to score three runs.
But Troy was still in control and built its lead to 13 runs, 16-3, in the bottom of the third. Cole’s two-run single was the highlight of the inning.
The 15-run rule was invoked after the Lady Trojans scored twice in the fourth. Infield singles by Ellah Wallace and Gravier set the table for Addison Fisher. She bunted and a series of errors helped the 18th run come across the plate to end the game.
Tuesday, Troy travels to Priest River, Idaho. Thursday, the Lady Trojans host a doubleheader against Florence-Carlton in what may be the games of the year in western Montana. The Falcons are also unbeaten and finished fourth in the Class B/C state tournament. Florence won back-to-back state titles in 2021-22 and own 11 state championships since 2000.
