Cabinet Peaks' Stenros honored with DAISY Extraordinary Nurse Award
Dawna Stenros of Cabinet Peaks Medical Center was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses.
The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination submitted read, “As a patient, having Dawna was a true God send. She addressed all of my pain needs post shoulder surgery. She is kind, professional and truly cared for me as a patient. She is a great observer. My pain level from the surgery was very intense. Dawna recognized a problem with my sling, fixed it and my pain level dropped 50% and remained better than it had been for a period of 24 hours. She truly cares for her patients and their well-being. I love the kind words and conversations calming effects. She is truly professional."
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.
The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at CPMC are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
Chief Nursing Officer Tonya Teegardin praised Stenros for her dedication.
“We have been blessed with amazing nurses, such as Dawna Stenros, at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center," Teegardin said. "Steve Jobs once said, ‘Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.’ I truly believe that Dawna Stenros loves what she does, and that love transforms into the amazing care she provides each day. It was our honor to recognize Dawna and celebrate the exceptional care she provides.”
In addition to the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in over 4,600 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing with recognition of direct care nurses, nurse-led teams, nurse leaders, nurses advancing health equity, nursing faculty, nursing students, Lifetime Achievement in Nursing and through the J.
