Cabinet Peaks CEO addresses political ads

| September 20, 2024 7:00 AM

A series of recent political campaign advertisements has raised concerns about closure of hospitals in Montana’s rural communities.

These ads were not coordinated with, approved or endorsed by Cabinet Peaks Medical Center.

It is important for our community to know that despite the alarming nature of these ads, Cabinet Peaks Medical Center is not at immediate risk of closure. We remain fully committed to providing essential healthcare services to the communities we serve.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit hospital, we are legally prohibited under the Internal Revenue Code from directly or indirectly participating in or intervening in any political campaign on behalf of—or in opposition to—any candidate for public office. Nonprofit hospitals cannot and will not engage in such campaigns, as doing so could jeopardize our tax-exempt status, which is vital to delivering healthcare in rural communities.

We understand that the statements in these ads are unsettling for members of the community, and it is regrettable that any campaign would employ such tactics. Frankly, I find it incomprehensible.

There are indeed several real challenges that threaten the financial and operational sustainability of rural hospitals across our state. Decisions made at the federal and state levels, along with regulations from various governing bodies, have a significant impact on the ability of rural hospitals to continue operating.

We encourage our community to stay engaged, ask questions, and better understand the unique issues facing their local healthcare providers.

It is unfortunate that we need to address this matter, as it shifts attention from our main priority: delivering quality, compassionate care to our community. Rest assured, our team remains fully committed to providing the best possible care to every patient we serve.

We want to express our gratitude for the continued trust and support from the community. Your well-being is our top priority and we will continue to strive for excellence at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center.

Sincerely,

Tadd Greenfield CEO, Cabinet Peaks Medical Center
