Robert (Bob) Joseph Malyevac

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Joseph Malyevac, who peacefully passed away on Sept. 9, 2024, at the age of 83. 

He was an amazing, loving husband, father, grandpa, friend and neighbor. You couldn’t ask for a better Dad. 

Bob was married to his beloved wife, Connie, from Aug. 10, 1968, until her passing in 2022. He dedicated his full 40-year career to teaching history, English, geography, and his true passion, Montana history. 

Many of his lessons can’t be found in any book; they simply came from his heart. He left a lasting impact on countless students of all ages.

Born in Butte, Montana, to Steve and Jeanette Malyevac on Feb. 18, 1941, Bob grew up working at his family’s gas station, where he learned the gift of gab while checking the oil, airing up the tires, and cleaning windshields. 

In his younger years, he spent countless hours training as a competitive speed skater. Bob graduated from Butte High School and earned his Bachelor’s of Education at Western Montana University. 

He later earned a Master’s of School Administration from the University of Montana.

Bob spent over 50 years in Libby, Montana, where he became a cherished member of the community. He had a passion for golfing, fishing, hunting, tending to his beautiful yard and especially sharing a good story. 

He was always up for a drive and thoroughly enjoyed the beauty of Montana; even a trip to the dump brought him joy. 

Bob was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, known for its charitable work and support of Catholic education, where he was a distinguished 4th Degree Knight and served for over 60 years at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He was also a dedicated member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, an American fraternal order that focuses on community service, charity, and patriotism. As an Elk, he held many local and state offices, including serving as Exalted Ruler multiple times.

Additionally, Bob was involved in the Heritage Project, an initiative aimed at preserving and promoting Libby’s local history and culture.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie. 

Survivors include his brother, David Malyevac, of King George, Virginia; his son, Robert (Michelle) Malyevac; his daughters, Deanna and Allyson (Scott) Gatzemeier of Boise, Idaho; grandsons, Reece and Jake; granddaughters, Stephanie, Jordan and Mckinley; great-grandchildren, Dayvian, Pyper, Anyka, Beau, Ridge, Rhiley and Barzia; in-laws, Kathie (Tom) Foley of Butte, Montana, Craig (Bobbie) Savage of Liberty Lake, Washington, and William (Veda) Savage of Springfield, Oregon; nephews, Tom, Dan, Craig, Connor and Steve; nieces, Debbie, Meghan and JoAnn; and 19 grand-nephews and nieces.

Bob’s warmth, wisdom and love for life will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He loved spending time with his family, friends and neighbors. His legacy will live on through all he touched. 

A wake will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the Schnackenberg Funeral Home of Libby, Montana. A rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, and the funeral mass to follow at 11 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Libby, Montana.

The family would like to thank all those who cared for, prayed for and provided love and support.
