Logger girls soccer slams Frenchtown, 7-0
The domination wasn’t just on the scoreboard.
The Libby Loggers girls soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 7-0 win over Frenchtown, Saturday, Aug. 31, at J. Neils Memorial Park.
Less than five minutes into the game, freshman Zoey Bernall set up senior Morgan Hayes for the first goal. Five minutes later, senior Kaydence Stanek, assisted by senior Madison Vincent, scored the first of her three goals, to make it 2-0, and it was more than enough.
According to Libby team statistics, the Broncs only had one shot on goal and no corner kicks.
Meanwhile, Libby (1-0) had 12 shots on goal.
Stanek, also assisted by Vincent, scored her second goal with five minutes left in the half to make it 3-0.
For new Loggers head coach Michael Hewston, he saw a number of things that pleased him.
“The Loggers had some sparks of perfection during the match,” Hewston said. “The possession in combination with the passing and moving with the ball is getting closer to how we practice. The Loggers used good judgment on when to use the grounded through ball and when to use the flighted big ball. The highlight for this coach was six consecutive passes ending with a shot. This is what we coach and it happened one time in the second half.”
Junior Zoey Warner got the second half off to a good start for Libby when she scored a few minutes in for a 4-0 lead. After assisting on Libby’s first goal, Bernall scored one of her own to make it 5-0 halfway through the second half.
Stanek and Vincent teamed up again to give Stanek the hat trick. With just four minutes left, Bernall assisted on a goal by Vincent for a 7-0 final.
Sophomore Maura Mesenbrink got the shutout, aided by strong defense from defenders Marissa Hollingsworth, Bergan Fortner, Kylee Derryberry, Maggie Fontozzi and midfielders Bernall, Hayes, Joslin Gassmann and Keyera Haischer.
Libby played at Bigfork Thursday, then Saturday at Loyola.
