He suffered from a sudden heart attack while at home in Billings. Steve was born in Libby, Montana on June 20, 1955 to Earl and Glen Grotjohn. He was the oldest of six children.

While attending a friend’s wedding, Steve met his California girl Rene Sterner. The next year they were married in San Jose, California on Oct. 15, 1977. They chose to build their life together in Libby.

After two short years, they were blessed with their first child, Katie, soon to be followed by Christopher and Bryan. He was so proud of his family and their home on Kootenai River Road which provided his children the opportunity to learn and enjoy the childhood he had experience

After the closure of the lumber mill, he and Rene moved to the Billings area to be closer to their children and grandchildren. While in Billings, Steve continued to work until his retirement in 2023.

They purchased a camper and enjoyed following their family around the state to sporting events, fishing tournaments and family fun.
