Walter Charles Morkert

Walter C. Morkert, 84, of Libby, Montana, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023. 

Walt was born Sept. 24, 1939, in Thompson Falls, Montana to Bud and Leona (Polley) Morkert and later moved with his family to Clinton, Montana.

After high school, Walt joined the Army Airborne and was a paratrooper, serving in various places, including Okinawa. In 1971, he met Marilyn Johnson of Missoula and they were married on Sept. 1, 1972. 

The couple raised their three daughters while living and working in logging in Superior, Montana and later Libby, Montana.

Walt was a sawyer, tong slinger, dozer operator and log loader operator, and high line skidder operator for Timber Tech and later, before retirement, Bob Javorski and Jim McRell. He owned his own business.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter and bowhunter. Walt was very family oriented and loved gardening, sharing much of his bounty. He was a member of the Libby Assembly of God church and loved his church family. 

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Bud S. and Leona Morkert.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Libby; daughters, Rylene Coffman of Boise, Idaho, Raina Hoff (Jeff) of Libby, and Amy Schrenk (Scott) of Plains, Montana; six grandchildren Ethan, Ashlyn (Logan), Kayla, Halle, Brady and Gavin; siblings Stan Morkert (Edie) of Oregon, Dennis Morkert (Linda) of Libby, and Connie McAdam. 

Walt loved Jesus and was “ready to go home.”

The visitation is at Schnackenberg Funeral Home; 422 West 2nd Street, Libby, Montana from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2023.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, at Libby Assembly of God.
