Libby resident appreciates Christmas lights

| December 6, 2024 7:00 AM

Dear Editor,

This letter that I am writing to you is many years overdue.
My Mom and I have a holiday tradition. On one evening in early December, we buy eggnog milkshakes and go drive around Libby and look at Christmas lights.
One snowy December evening, several years ago, my Mom came to my house. I got into her car and off we went to purchase two eggnog milkshakes. As we pulled out of the drive-through, my Mom turned Christmas music on the radio and we sipped our eggnog milk shakes and began our Christmas light looking adventure.
As my Mom drove around our town of Libby, we saw so many beautiful houses all aglow with an amazing assortment of Christmas colors. Many houses caused us to gasp in awe and comment on the beauty we saw in the sparkling display of lights.
I was so grateful to be enjoying the brightly lit and adorned houses that I told my mom I should write a letter to the editor and express my thanks to all the people who made our evening so full of light.
I wanted to express my gratitude on the hard work done by our Libby residents as they painstakenly hung each and every string of Christmas lights and artfully placed each outdoor Christmas ornament.
I wanted to convey how much I appreciated the extra expense that Libby residents endured during the holiday season as the lovely lights used up the electricity. I wanted to relay that their effort was sincerely enjoyed and brought me a deep and heartwarming sense of Christmas spirit.
I had the best of intentions. Alas, I never sent that letter to the editor.
The following December, as my Mom and I ventured out on our holiday evening of eggnog milkshakes and light looking, I once again marveled at the brightly lit houses. I told my Mom that I really must send that letter to the editor.
Again, I never sent the letter that year. One year became two, Two years became three, three years became four, etc.

My letter of appreciation never got sent. This year, I am sending my letter to the editor.

I want to thank all of the Libby residents who decorate their houses, yards, sheds and RVs with Christmas lights and decorations. I know it is time-consuming and I know it is expensive.

Just know that it is deeply appreciated. My Mom and I are able to have a lovely evening enjoying each other's company and enjoying the beauty of a December evening all lit up with Christmas color and spirit.
The most sincere thanks from the bottom of my heart.
Michelle Kristine Smith, Libby
