The Kootenai Valley Quilt Guild is honored to announce Angie Pankey as the 2024 Quilter of the Year.

Each year the local quilt guild selects a member based on their contributions to the organization.

Many area folks know Pankey from her work with the hospital auxiliary, the Ignite the Nites Car Show, her work on the Head Start Board, as well as her homeowners association board.

As a native Montanan, she moved to Libby in 1984 from Butte where she worked with the Junior League and the Big Brother Big Sister program.

Pankey clearly has a heart for giving and has continued her community work with the guild. She has been a member of the guild for about 20 years. She currently serves as the Community Service Projects Chairman as well as co-chair for the Kids Sew Camp each year. She served two years on the quilt board.

Angie has been quilting for about 50 years. Like so many quilters she learned to sew as a youngster while her mother was a local 4H leader teaching both her and her sister to sew.

She sewed clothes for her children as they were growing up. While a part of the Montana Faculty Women’s Club at Montana Tech she learned how to quilt by hand for a fundraiser and she has been quilting ever since.

There have been many new techniques to arise in the world of quilting and Angie enjoys learning them all. She recently attended classes to learn two of those new techniques but she seems to always return to her love of traditional methods. She is currently working on a quilt for a grandson’s wedding and a 2025 fundraiser.

As this year’s featured quilter many pieces of Angie’s work will be on display at the 2024 Kootenai Valley Quilt show along with many other beautiful quilts. This year's show will be Sept. 6-7 at the Libby Memorial Center.

All are invited to come and see the handiwork of the many talented quilters in our area.
