A teenage bicyclist was taken to the Cabinet Peaks Medical Center Monday afternoon in Libby after being struck by a vehicle.

According to Libby Police Chief Cody Ercanbrack, two youths, one on a skateboard and another on a bicycle, were west bound on 6th Street as they approached Louisiana Avenue.

Ercanbrack reported the teenager on the skateboard noticed oncoming traffic, stopped and warned the other boy. But the bicyclist didn't stop and was struck by a vehicle. The chief said the driver was not facing charges.

Michael and Ashley Tullis, parents of the 12-year-old boy, Alex, spoke with The Western News Wednesday afternoon.

"Alex was taken to the emergency room in Libby but was eventually flown by helicopter to the ER in Kalispell," Ashley said. "His pelvis has three buckle fractures, his leg is broken just below his knee, along with a torn ACL and smashed growth plate and his leg is broken just above his ankle, all on his right side where the car hit him."

Michael, a contractor, said Alex was in surgery for most of Wednesday. Ashley said the hope was to repair his knee, add a plate and screws and possibly pin the bone above his ankle.

"He will eventually need another surgery after he heals to remove the hardware," Ashley said. "He will be put on bed rest for a few weeks until his pelvis can support his weight."

Alex is one of five children, ranging from 6 to 17 years old, to Mike and Ashley. Her mother, who she said is dealing with cancer, and her husband are taking care of the other four kids while they are with Alex.

"We're hopeful insurance covers most of the expenses, but the helicopter flight is very expensive and I have to take time off from work, so were not sure what everything will cost," Mike said.

Ashley said it's an extremely stressful time now.

"I home school the kids and our 17-year-old has special needs, but Alex is talking to his buddies now, so we're hopeful for his recovery," Ashley said.

Ashley also shared on Facebook, "He has an extremely long, painful road ahead of him. Normally, Michael and I wouldn't dream of asking for help but in this situation we are. If you can help, my PayPal and Zelle account is montanamomma6@gmail.com.
