Birding event planned for Sept. 30 in Libby
A raptor search and fall birding class will be offered in Libby on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Raptors are now in fall migration, heading south from their breeding grounds. These birds of prey utilize thermals and updrafts to help them travel and tend to follow traditional migratory routes.
People interested in the program should be at the Venture Inn in Libby at 9 a.m. Mountain Standard Time for birding tips before heading to the field at 9:30 a.m.
To attend, participants must register by calling 406-291-2154 or emailing b_baxter53@yahoo.com. This is an adult class only, no children, no pets. All levels of birders are welcome.
Biologist Brian Baxter said at least three different habitat types will be visited to search for avian species. The educational and fun birding adventure will include the search for raptors, waterfowl, woodpeckers, shorebirds and songbirds.
Baxter advised to come prepared with full gas tanks, proper clothing wearing natural colors or camouflage and footwear appropriate for short hikes on private lands less than 3/4 mile round trip. He also said to bring lunch, water, binoculars, spotting scopes, field guide books and a good sense of humor. The event will wrap up at 3 p.m. It will be held rain or shine and for those who need to cancel, they are asked to call 24 hours ahead.
Baxter also explained that the event is not an E-Bird instruction class, but rather focuses on utilizing powers of observation and proven ID methods.
