The Troy Trojans boys basketball team opened its season with a 61-36 win over Alberton last Friday, but couldn’t keep the momentum going Saturday night at home against St. Regis.

The Tigers were dialed in from long distance as they made several 3-point shots in a 57-39 win at the Troy Activity Center.

St. Regis made three from long range in the first quarter while grabbing a 21-12 lead.

The Trojans fell behind by 11 points, 17-6, with 3:20 left.

Senior Derek Cole scored on a putback and the Trojans hit a buzzer beater to cut the deficit to nine points.

But St. Regis took a 16-point halftime lead on the strength of a 9-0 run to begin the second quarter.

Trailing 30-12, Cole’s putback stopped the run and sophomore Carson Orr driving layup made it 32-16 with 2:23 left in the third.

The Trojans started strong in the fourth, scoring 13 of the first 16 points to slash the St. Regis deficit to just six points, 35-29, with 3:29 left.

Junior Cody Todd opened the fourth with a 3-pointer and Cole scored four straight baskets, including three on putbacks to make it a six-point  deficit.

But the Tigers hit three straight 3-pointers in the next 1:48 to push their lead back to 15 points. A free throw late in the third capped a 10-0 St. Regis run in the last 3:18 and left Troy trailing by 16 points, 45-29, entering the fourth quarter.

The Trojans kept fighting with sophomore Emerson Downey scoring and Troy got as close at 11 points, but Kaleb Park’s 3-pointer put the lead back to 14 in an eventual 18-point win.

The Trojans return to action Friday at Noxon with tipoff at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, they host Hot Springs at 4 p.m.
