Troy Lady Trojans can't overcome slow start against St. Regis

The Troy Lady Trojans basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start in a 52-21 season-opening loss Saturday evening to St. Regis at the Troy Activity Center.
St. Regis bolted to a 17-0 lead in the first 4:46 of the game. The Lady Tigers led 19-2 after one quarter and 23-4 at halftime.
Five different Lady Tigers scored in the 17-0 run before Lady Trojan sophomore Brooklyn Reid grabbed a long defensive rebound and drove for a layup.
Reid scored Troy’s only basket of the second quarter and its first basket of the third quarter on a 3-pointer from the baseline with 6:11 left.
Junior Cortenie Rogers made a steal and scored a layup with 5:12 left for Troy’s eighth and ninth points. Reid’s layup late in the third made it 35-12. Reid had another 3-pointer in the fourth quarter while junior Autumn Fisher and freshman Hailey Dungan also scored in the final frame.
St. Regis junior Shylah Dalka is the shortest player on the Lady Tigers’ roster at 5 feet, but her quickness and ball handling were keys for the visiting team. She scored five first quarter points and made a handful of good passes to set up her teammates for easy baskets.
The Lady Trojans return to action Friday at Noxon with tipoff at 4 p.m. Saturday, they host Hot Springs at 2:30 p.m.
