John Landon

| June 24, 2022 7:00 AM

John Landon was born on Oct. 19, 1947, in Libby, Montana. He passed away on June 2, 2022, in his sleep, and at his home in Libby, Montana.

John was raised in Libby, having been a popular student and talented athlete. A graduate of the Class of 1965, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966. Following his honorable discharge in 1970 he attended Portland Community College where he earned an Associates Degree.

In 1971 he was one of the original 14 deputies hired at the Washington County Sheriff's Department (Hillsboro, Oregon), formed under a new local levy. After a few years as a patrolman, he decided to return to his hometown in 1975 and worked as a Libby namesake - he drove a logging truck alongside his father and many friends.

In 1983, John and his family moved back to Oregon where he was hired back on at the sheriff's department. John remained with the department until his retirement in 2003. His sheriff's career was extensive and exciting for him.

John earned the rank of Sergeant and spent much of his career as a detective. He also supervised some major departments and divisions including, but not limited to, the Regional Organized Crime Narcotics Unit (ROCN) and the Gang Team Unit.

Upon his retirement in 2003 he hit the open road to live the quintessential life of a retiree. Hauling a large fifth-wheel camper, John cruised and toured much of the United States and crossed over into Canada occasionally. The freedom and time to explore the country is something he cherished.

He was a hometown boy, and after the many years and the many thrills that traveling brought him he permanently relocated back to Libby in 2014. He spent these last years meeting friends for coffee, helping plan his class reunions, shopping, visiting with friends, and working on projects at his house and on his property.

John will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.

He is survived by his daughter Courtney (David) Platt, Rathdrum, Idaho; his son Brian (Jessica) and newborn granddaughter Maryn Rose Landon, Portland, Oregon; his sister Diane Williamson, Spokane, Washington; niece Brandy (Glen) Steiger and their children (Kristen, Brooklen, Cody), Sandpoint, Idaho; and nephew Ben Williamson and his daughter (Alexis), Butte, Montana.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Meron "Shorty" and Dorothy Landon, and his brother-in-law Michael "Willie" Williamson.

The date and time of a service has yet to be determined but is anticipated for late summer/early fall. An abridged obituary will be reposted with details once arrangements have been made.
