James W. “Jim” Smart

James W. “Jim” Smart, 91, passed on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at his home in Libby, Montana. He was 15 days from his 92nd birthday.

He was born on July 28, 1930, in Missoula, Montana. The second oldest of five boys of Stan and Lois Smart, he graduated from Hellgate High School.

He attended college at University of Montana and University of Washington.

He married Phyllis Bellmore in 1950. They had three children: Donald, Robert, and Dianne.

Jim had great passion for golf, and was active at Cabinet View Country Club. He aced his favorite hole twice. He enjoyed playing card games like Back Alley Bridge with extended family, cribbage with his father and Mitzi, and Pinochle with a local group! He was active at his church, and with Gideons.

Jim owned Smart’s Mobil gas and oil for about 20 years. He was a draftsman for Boeing prior, then operated Mauer Realty, delivered oxygen for NORCO, worked at ASARCO, and had a locksmith business.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brothers Royal and Bill, and his daughter-in-law Mitzi.

He is survived by his three children; grandchildren: Amy, Philip (Tara), and Kayla; great grandchildren: Vincent (Ashley), Jack, Sam and Piper; great-great granddaughter Finley; brothers Doug (Dixie), and Ted (LeaAnne); and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the United Methodist Church in Libby.

Internment will take place immediately after, followed by a reception at Fireman’s Park.
