Libby's DeShazer places fourth at Tri-State

The Libby High School wrestlers continued their strong beginning to the 2022-23 season last weekend.

Greenchain grapplers competed at the Tri-State Tournament at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene Friday and Saturday and the Buzz Lucey Tournament in Eureka on Saturday.

According to results on trackwrestling.com, junior 195-pounder Jace DeShazer placed fourth at Tri-State. He opened with two second-period pins. He reached the semifinals with a win due to injury default.

In the semifinals, DeShazer suffered his first loss of the season after unbeaten Gentry Smith of Post Falls, Idaho, pinned him in 4:50. Smith went on to win the weight class.

In the wrestlebacks, DeShazer reached the third place match with an 8-3 win over Othello’s Terrill Freeman. There, he lost a close decision to Flathead’s Sawyer Troupe, 6-4. Flathead, incidentally, won the tournament with 248.5 points. Post Falls, Idaho was second.

At 138 pounds, junior Zekiah Meyers was 3-2.

He opened with a pin of Kelso, Washington’s Alijah Guzman in 3:33 before getting pinned in 1:27 by Cheney, Washington’s Joe Showalter.

In the consolations, Meyers decisioned Coeur d’Alene’s Dax Larsen, 5-0, then pinned Lakeland, Idaho’s Kros O’Brien in 1:19. His tournament ended with a fall by Hermiston, Oregon’s Daniel Garza.

At 145 pounds, senior Cael Schwindt was 1-2. He had a first-round bye before pinning Lewistown, Idaho’s Gabe Ruth in 1:01. He then was pinned by Tonasket, Washington’s Tyge Plank in 1:58.

In the consolation round, Schwindt lost by fall to Mead, Washington’s Tyler Vandeventer in 1:44.

At the Buzz Lucey Tournament, the Loggers were sixth with 98.5 points. The host Lions were champions with 205 points while Florence was second, Superior took third, Plains was fourth and Bigfork fifth.

At 103 pounds, Libby’s Riley Orsborn was second after dropping an 8-5 decision to Eureka’s Colin Hickman.

At 132, Libby’s Marley Erickson was third after topping Bigfork’s Nathan Close, 7-3.

At 138, Logger Xavier Reatz was second after being pinned by Plains’ John Waterbury in 1:13.

At 205, Libby’s Gaige Bache was fourth after being pinned by Superior’s Jaxon Green.
