Greenchain second at Kinney Classic in Superior

The Libby Greenchain wrestling team crowned three champions and had a total of six placewinners Saturday at the 2022 Bob Kinney Classic in Superior.

According to trackwrestling.com, Libby placed second with 160 points. Corvallis was first with 181.5. Florence-Carlton was third with 138.5 while Plains-Hot Springs was fourth with 134. Superior was fifth and Bigfork placed sixth.

Thompson Falls, Whitefish, Stevensville and Mission-Charlo rounded out the top 10.

The Greenchain started well with 103-pounder Riley Orsborn winning all three of his matches to claim first.

Orsborn decked Bigfork’s Lyrik Fainter in 34 seconds in the quarterfinals. He decisioned Florence’s Max Rosenthal 8-1 in the semifinals before pinning Corvallis’ Kiera Davis in 2:56.

At 205 pounds, Jace DeShazer didn’t spend much time on the mat in his first two matches, racking up pins in a total of 1:56.

DeShazer went into the second period with Corvallis’ Bryce Weidow before pinning him in 3:57. He was named the tourney's Outstanding Wrestler.

Heavyweight Tyler Smith was 4-0 to claim the title. Smith rolled into the finals with first-period pins in his first two matches and a three-minute fall in the semifinals.

In the finals, Smith won by disqualification over Superior’s Chandon Vulles.

At 113, Bridger Bache was 2-2 and placed fourth. In the consolation semifinals, Bache sewed up a place with a pin of Thompson Falls’ Austin Carlson in 1:04. He was pinned in the third-place match by Plains’ John Thurston.

Zekiah Meyers (3-1) placed second at 138 pounds. Meyers pinned his way to the finals where he dropped a 10-5 decision to Plains/Hot Springs’ John Waterbury.

At 182, Matt Niemi was busy wrestling five matches. He was 4-1 and placed third. Niemi opened with a pin before getting pinned in the quarterfinals by Bigfork’s Dale Relyea in 4:23.

But he rallied in the wrestlebacks with a fall and a decision to reach the third-place match where he decked Florence’s Sean Larson in one minute.

At 120 pounds, Sami Jocks was 2-2. At 126, Jeremiah Thomas was 1-2 while Boe Miles was 2-2. At 132, Marley Erickson also was 2-2 while Gabe Kosters was 0-2. At 138, Xavier Reatz was 2-2.

Mauro Vaszuez-Otero was 0-2 at 145. At 152, Joel Goodman was 2-2 while Noah Gillespie and Ian Thom were each 1-2. At 160, Coby Booker was 1-2 and Tanner Wolfe was 0-2.

Chase Rayome (0-2) was 0-2 at 170 pounds and at heavyweight, Drew Munro was 2-2.

The Greenchain will be in Coeur d’Alene Friday and Saturday for the prestigious Tri-State Tournament at North Idaho College.
