Opponents of the Libby Loggers will have to stop the running back tandem of Cy Stevenson and Jace DeShazer if they hope to have success.

The East Helena Vigilantes did not stop either back and were dealt a 37-0 loss Friday night in a Western A football.

The hosts got 164 yards and two touchdowns from Stevenson and 155 yards and one TD from DeShazer. Senior quarterback Trevor Collins ran for 26 yards and two touchdowns. Collins also threw for 35 yards as the Loggers outgained East Helena, 451-134.

The Loggers lost the coin toss, but the Vigilantes decided to receive the second-half kickoff.

Isaac Lamere’s kick return set the Loggers up at their 31 and DeShazer’s 22-yard run put them in East Helena territory. The Loggers picked up a second first down on a fourth down play and Stevenson 32-yard burst put the ball on the 3. DeShazer finished the drive and Mauro Vazquez-Otero’s PAT kick made it 7-0 a little more than three minutes into the game.

Four minutes later, the lead was 14-0.

After the defense held the Vigilantes on downs, the Loggers got a 49-yard run from DeShazer on third down. Stevenson capped the drive with a 3-yard run and Vazquez-Otero’s second PAT kick pushed their advantage to 14 points.

A few possessions later, the Loggers defense put two points on the scoreboard when junior Chayse Hartley sacked East Helena quarterback Hagen Paddock in the end zone early in the second quarter.

The lead ballooned to 24 points on the ensuing possession. Libby began at the Vigilantes 35.

JR Delmas caught a 9-yard pass from Collins and Stevenson’s 14-yard run put the ball on the 12. Collins ran for the end zone, got banged around a bit, but still got it for the TD.

The snap for the PAT was off, but Ryan Beagle hit Stevenson for the conversion.

The Loggers made it 30-0 at the half when Stevenson bolted for a 51-yard TD run on a fake with 1:00 left. DeShazer had a 22-yard run and Collins added a 7-yarder on the drive.

Collins scored Libby’s last TD on a 3-yard run with 6:20 left in the third quarter.

DeShazer and Stevenson each had eight tackles on defense while Connor Hartley and Kasen Day both had interceptions.

The Loggers are on the road for their next two games. Friday, they take on Ronan, then travel to Bonners Ferry on Sept. 9. Libby’s next home game is Sept. 16 against Columbia Falls.
