Driver rams through building on U.S. Hwy. 2
Local first responders extricated the driver of a pickup truck after his vehicle careened off of U.S. Highway 2 and tore through a roadside home just outside of Libby.
The driver was heading southbound on the afternoon of May 12 when he swerved across four lanes of traffic, clipped a telephone pole and crashed into a house on the east side of the street. Aidan Schaffer, a Montana Highway Patrol trooper, said speed and reckless driving likely played a role in the crash. Schaffer said law enforcement was still investigating any other factors that might have contributed to the wreck.
Witnesses said they heard at least one of the truck’s tires pop before the driver went off the road.
“I heard the tire pop and looked out the window and he was just flying,” said Ryder Davis, who lives near the site of the wreck.
Scott Beagle, assistant chief with Libby Volunteer Fire Department, said apart from the driver, no one was harmed in the crash. Along with the fire department, the Libby Volunteer Ambulance Service and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
Ambulance crews extricated the driver from the crash scene and took him to Cabinet Peaks Medical Center. Beagle said responders had called Life Flight to transport the motorist to Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
