Lincoln County Commissioners passed a resolution to separate the county’s treasurer and superintendent of schools positions. The action lets commissioners appoint an interim superintendent.

During an April 28 meeting, Commissioner Jerry Bennett (D-2) said past commissioners consolidated the two positions in 2013. At the time, the elected treasurer Nancy Trotter Higgins was qualified to fill both roles. It also made sense — financially — for the county to merge the posts.

Since then, changes in personnel interests and abilities have led county officials to consider separating the positions again.

“While it’s served its purpose for a few years, it’s time to get back to separating those and looking for a qualified individual in that other capacity as superintendent of schools,” said Bennett.

Sedaris Carlberg, current superintendent and treasurer, will stay on as the county’s treasurer.

In early April, the commissioners passed a resolution marking their intent to take action. Before officially splitting the positions, commissioners held a public hearing during their April 28 meeting.

“I see we have people knocking down the doors,” joked Bennett when no residents showed up to speak on the matter.

Carlberg later joined the meeting to show her support.

“I’m moved,” she said after Commissioner Mark Peck (D-1) made a motion to approve the resolution.

“You’re moved and removed,” quipped Peck.

Carlberg will have to file a letter of resignation before stepping down from the post of superintendent. Commissioners will appoint an interim superintendent until the position can be filled in the next general election.
