Libby officials are reminding residents that fireworks are illegal within city limits and asking them to take extra precautions while celebrating the Fourth of July given the dry weather.

Mayor Brent Teske made mention of the municipal ordinance during Libby City Council’s June 21 meeting. While the ordinance carves out an exception for New Year’s Eve, pyrotechnics are verboten during the rest of the year.

Teske acknowledged that the rules in the county are less stringent, but urged residents to enjoy fireworks safely and responsibly if they crossed over the city line.

“It’s hot dry and dusty out there right now,” Teske said. “We’re at a heightened level of fire awareness so please be cautious no matter where you use fireworks.”

On June 28, Libby Police Chief Scott Kessel issued another reminder, saying it was critical, given the weather, to follow the rules.

“This is an even bigger concern with the extreme hot and dry weather we are currently experiencing,” Kessel said.

The National Weather Service has placed Libby and its environs under an excessive heat warning until July 1. As of Monday morning, the agency forecast temperatures up to 110 in the region.

“Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” read the warning.

The service recommends residents drink fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, keep out of the sun and check in on relatives and friends.
