The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to be wary of a caller impersonating a well-known local peace officer.

Sheriff Darren Short said that residents have recently received calls from a person purporting to be “Lt. Darren Short with the Libby Police Department.” Short said the caller may be trying to impersonate other law enforcement officials. Regardless, it is a scam, officials said.

Short suspected the caller was using outdated online information. A former city police officer, Short noted that he has not worked for the Libby Police Department in years.

Short urged residents not to give the caller any information. According to a post on the Sheriff's Office’s Facebook page, the scam call is coming from the number 496-302-4892.

After calling the number, officials said it sent callers to a “Warrant Department."
