Big Sky Bash fundraiser cancelled as pandemic worsens

The Center for Asbestos Related Disease Foundation’s major annual fundraiser was cancelled earlier this month as concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic continued to grow.

Although the Big Sky Bash was scheduled for July 11, organizers said they could not proceed with planning for the event in light of the illness’ spread. The fundraiser is supported through sponsorships and donations from the community, many coming from businesses now shuttered because of the pandemic, officials said.

Given the mass closures and economic upheaval, organizers decided against asking business owners to financially back the festivities.

“They all need to focus on their well being, their families and their businesses,” the foundation’s board wrote in a statement. “We don’t know how long the shut downs will last, and we don’t want to run the risk of using up our reserve funds. Unfortunately the risks outweigh the benefits.”

Those who have already purchased a ticket online will receive a refund, organizers said.

In years past, the foundation has hosted acts like Three Dog Night and Great White. Money raised through the event goes toward funding the nonprofit medical center, which offers care for area residents suffering from asbestos-related diseases.
