Lincoln County Justice Court judge has room for improvement

| February 28, 2020 10:17 AM

To the editor:

Some months back a letter critical of Judge Jay C. Sheffield of Lincoln County Justice Court was printed. Having now observed the judge in action, I can only say that the criticism was understated.

The judge is completely ignorant of basic courtroom procedure, rules of evidence and compliance with discovery. For daring to try to speak in court, I was accused of creating a circus.

It was not necessary for me to “create a circus” as the judge was doing very well himself. Whenever the defense tries to speak, the judge interrupts. The prosecution is free to speak at will and ignore legal rules.

It is fine for a judge to be tough, but not to make up the law as he goes along. Lincoln County deserves better.
